To learn more about this sensational game, we had the opportunity to speak with Yasuda and Yamagiva to learn more about Wo Long: The Fallen Dynastya unique setting, their approach to creating complex (but fair) combat mechanics, and much more.

Thank you for taking the time today to answer some of our upcoming questions. Wo Long: The Fallen Dynasty. For our Xbox fans who may not be familiar with some of your previous work, could you please introduce yourself to our readers and briefly talk about some of the previous games you’ve worked on?

YasudaA: I am (Fumihiko) Yasuda, the head of the ninja team. I am also the producer of this game. I used to work on many games where people get cut with swords like Ninja Gaiden as well as Nioh series as a director and/or producer.

Yamagiva: I’m (Masaaki) Yamagiwa from Team Ninja. I am a development producer Wo Long: The Fallen Dynasty. I used to work at SIE as a producer on projects like Bloody as well as Tokyo Jungle.

Could you tell us a little more about the hero we’ll be playing as? Wo Long: The Fallen Dynasty? How in Niohis he inspired by a historical or folk hero?

Yasuda: The protagonist is a nameless militiaman whose story is not told in the story. Since this game is based on a story, we decided to use the original protagonist because the lack of a specific character from history or folklore as a hero minimizes the restrictions that are usually placed on situations and production, allowing us to illustrate their relationships with various officers. that appear in the Three Kingdoms and simplifies the portrayal of the protagonist taking a role in exciting battles.

Wo Long: The Fallen Dynasty has been described as a spiritual successor Nioh series. Do you consider this description to be an accurate representation of the gameplay we can expect to see in Wo Long?

Yasuda: I think the game will live up to those expectations given the Team Ninja-like difficulty level and intense combat. Other than that, the period and locations are different, so besides the art style and the game world, I think players will find the biggest difference between the games in action. Nioh samurai action Wo Long is a game based on Chinese martial arts, so each game has big differences in terms of system and gameplay feel.

What is your approach to combat? Wo Long: The Fallen Dynasty? What will the Chinese martial arts experience be like for the players? Are there other martial arts influences that we can expect?

Yasuda: AT Wo Long: The Fallen Dynasty, there is no concept of stamina, instead there is Deflection which can cause you to instantly switch between offensive and defensive moves, so this is a design that has very fast fights and constant switching between offense and defense. Enemies are very strong and unlikely to let their guard down, so I think players will enjoy much more aggressive combat.

What inspired the decision to tell the story in a dark fantasy version of the Three Kingdoms? Was it something you’ve wanted to do for a long time?

Yasuda: While thinking about Team Ninja and what’s next in the Nioh series, we were looking at a world that wasn’t “Sengoku-era Japan”, and since I personally really like the stories of the Three Kingdoms officers, we started thinking about the concept of a dark role-playing game, action which takes place during the chaotic period of the Three Kingdoms. With the legends of thousands of years of Chinese history, the visual style of the Late Han period, an overwhelming scale map combined with pace and strategic combat based on Chinese martial arts, we decided that this would be the concept of a new title, and so we began to work on Wo Long.

Music can play an integral role in not only setting the tone for the game’s culture, but also setting the mood for this dark fantasy world that you create. Can you talk about this creative journey bringing these instrumental elements to life in Wo Long: The Fallen Dynasty?

Yamagiva: We use traditional Chinese musical instruments such as the erhu to create music that is truly playable. Also, for officers’ combat music, we choose a theme such as that officer’s life or personality, and not only set the direction of the entire track, but also come up with ways to adapt the theme and emphasize it during battles or other situations.

Can you share with us some of the games that have inspired you to develop and influence Wo Long: The Fallen Dynasty?

Yamagiva: We have referred to dark fantasy titles such as Dark souls and went through trial and error to figure out what kind of visuals we needed, especially since this game is based on the three kingdoms and China. Apart from games, we also took inspiration from many references such as Chinese cinema and historical records, resulting in Qi, demons, and other elements that make this game what it is.

For a player who might be new to the genre and your approach to combat and exploration, what aspect Wo Long: The Fallen Dynasty Are you hoping they will resonate with them the most, making it hard to turn off the controller?

Yasuda: This is by no means an easy game, but we want players to experience an overpowering sense of accomplishment by getting through difficult moments after a process of trial and error. To do this, the game cannot be irrational, but must be fair and have a high degree of freedom, which is why we are especially careful in this aspect while maintaining Team Ninja’s signature feel, which we are particularly interested in.
