Fantastic Rogelite Isaac’s sacrifice has been around for about ten years since its initial incarnation, Flash. On Switch alone, it has been – along with the Afterbirth + expansion – for over four years. So the big, latest addition to the game with the “expansion” Repentance seems a little overdue. Fortunately, Isaac is a game that creates an obsession.

The further Isaac moved from his original incarnation, the less balanced and, therefore, less fun, it has become. Of course, he’s still the trump card – at some distance he remains the king of roguelites according to the author – but the bloat (not to be confused with the monster boss The Bloat) that appeared with each subsequent expansion made the game more difficult and less easy. , not as entertainment. Of course, you don’t expect to win every playthrough in a game like this, but create the Ghost on the ground floor without any bonuses and you can just restart as well.

But no more. In addition to adding 130 items, 100 enemies, 25 bosses and 20 new playable characters, Repentance significantly changes the balance of the game, improving many items and weakening others; Quite frankly, it serves nothing more than to make Isaac great again. Available as DLC or as a standalone physical version of the Switch directly from the publisher, there is so much new and reworked content, lots of graphics meticulously redrawn for consistency, new music, a new co-op with a more complete set of features (no more lame babies!) And a completely new ending with new super bosses to fight, which at times almost feels like a full-fledged sequel.

It cannot be stressed enough that – again, according to the author – Repentance is an almost full-blown apology for Afterbirth + influencing the game. While the purity of the original Flash title (and the original Rebirth remake) is completely lost, it remains one of the most meaningful and fully featured games available on the Switch.

Repentance is by no means perfect. It’s still pretty bloated depending on which ending you want, and there can be some nasty surprises for seasoned players; many of your favorite broken item combinations are no longer available or weakened to near uselessness. Greed mode still feels like a bad smell in the game, and in order to unlock most of the content, you have to overcome it over and over again with new characters and tainted versions of old ones.

Overall, this is a return to the form of The Binding of Isaac, close to conveying the magic of its original predecessor.The wrath of the lamb embodiment. The simplest recommendation we can give is that we can spend another 500 hours on a game that has been decisively burning us up so far. These Greed Mode unlocks may never see the light of day, but we’ll happily discover thousands of new synergies, defeat shiny new bosses, and explore an alternate in-game path to fight … well, that would be the story.

This expansion is an apology for what happened to Isaac and a promise to do better – a promise that it very much fulfills.
