Nintendo threw a King Bob-sized grenade into America’s social fabric yesterday when it announced that top Hollywood actor and charming country idiot Chris Pratt would be Mario. That’s right, the Italian plumber is finally back on the big screen after a hiatus of nearly 30 years. Marvel superhero and former Parks and recreation areas schlub seemed to be the last person Nintendo chose for the role, so of course, that’s exactly what she did.

“Imagine going through two recessions and a pandemic just to put up with Chris Pratt as Mario.” tweeted one person. “It’s been a while since we had to get together and intimidate a film studio into making drastic changes to an animated film, but I believe we can do it again.” wrote the other, referring to the time when a collective online outcry forced Paramount Pictures to shelve the Sonic movie so that the visual effects artists could fix his legs. Or how one person put“Knowing that Chris Pratt will be Mario is the exact opposite of knowing that Idris Elba is Knuckles.

Chris Pratt has become infamous over the last couple of years for being worst of hollywood chrises, at least in certain corners of public opinion. That’s why at least one random user on the net was able to predict Nintendo’s shocking revelation via the clairvoyant power of shitposting. But still, why are so many people so unhappy with this choice of actors, so much so that truthful statements like “Fred Armisen will voice Cranky Kong” have already receded into the back pages of the news?

There are many layers to this shit to unravel, so let’s start with the first and most obvious one. People seem unenthusiastic in the first place because they’re just sick of seeing Chris Pratt’s face everywhere. When the Minnesota-born actor initially broke out as Parks and recreation areasslacker shoe-shine Andy Dwyer, he was a sweet chump that not many people knew about. That is, apart from the fact that Pratt made them giggle with his absurd antics on Thursday nights, towards the end of the last heartbreaking work week. He was there if you needed him, optional and on the side, like a plate of roasted peanuts at a bar.

Now you can’t run away from him. Ten years later, he became Hollywood’s latest attempt at an old-school star. His transformation began as a bearded commando who helped capture Osama bin Laden in Zero Dark Thirties. Then he was the voice of a box office hit Lego Moviethe eternal optimist of the layman. And in 2014, Marvel specifically minted him as an unpleasant (but likable) hero for guardians of the galaxy.

Since then, he has also become an affable but torn dinosaur fighter in three new Jurassic Park films, reprized the role of Star-Lord in three subsequent Marvel films, released a sequel Lego Movieand established himself as a top-notch romantic by starring with Academy Award winner Jennifer Lawrence in Passengers. Just last month, he starred in a sci-fi shooter. Tomorrow is warwho sent male panic to stand up for the unsung blue collar white guy with 53% of the votes on Rotten Tomatoes. Some might say that he was too exposed. Now he is also Mario.

Which brings us to the second big mark against Chris Pratt, who plays in Nintendo’s iconic Italian jumper: he’s not Italian. It shouldn’t matter, especially when it comes to voice acting, but Pratt doesn’t exactly inspire confidence right now.

“It’s ah me, ah Mario,” he said in Instagram video posted last night in exactly the same voice as if I was pretending to be Chris Pratt pretending to be Mario. “It’s not a voice, you’ll have to wait to hear the voice, but we’ve been hard at work on this and I’m very happy to announce that I’m the voice of the video game I dreamed of playing as a kid.”

For decades, Mario has been the voice of Charles Martinet who is also not Italian, but has a theatrical background and an experienced voice actor who specializes in accents and dialects. He will to be involved in a new movie in some way, but at the moment it’s just another way for Nintendo to troll longtime fans. Here is Martinet make different Mario brothers. characters impromptu, without sweating. While it’s unlikely that Nintendo will bring Martine into the fold when the big-name A-List stars signed up for the film, many are still disappointed.

But why do some people really hate that Pratt is the new Hollywood face of gaming’s number one mascot? Well, it probably has to do with the fact that he was accused of going to church (Zoe Church). associated with anti-LGBTQ bigotry another church modeled (Hillsong). Hillsong has been accused of conducting gay conversion therapy, and his pastor has said the church does not approve of the “homosexual lifestyle.”

“His church is notorious for being anti-LGBTQ,” Elliot Page. tweeted back in 2019 when Pratt boasted of his spiritual conscientiousness on late-night television, Lego Movie 2. Pratt answered saying that “nothing could be further from the truth and that the doors of his church are open to ‘everyone’.

It became the usual two-stage for Pratt, with his vague remarks about some of the most pressing injustices of our time that motivate people to try get to the bottom of his political views. Guardians of the Galaxy The star’s name went viral on Twitter ahead of the 2020 presidential election after he was noticeably absent in Avengers actor-led fundraising for then-Democratic candidates Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.

Was he a secret Trump supporter? Another third method of “smallpox on both houses” centrist? Some people don’t care about an actor’s political ideology or party affiliations, but when you’re constantly in the spotlight of every major element of pop culture and you’re a multi-millionaire movie star with the ability to subtly poking in both directionspeople start to wonder if you are a truly free thinker or just an asshole.

Of course, Pratt has a lot of defenders. In particular, other Hollywood stars. When Worst Chris Meme War Flaring up last fall, Marvel co-stars Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr. and James Gunn rushed into the breach to tell the internet to stop picking on their very dear friend. So did Pratt’s wife, Katherine Schwarzenegger (yes, he married both the Schwarzenegger family and the Kennedy family), as did guardians co-star of Zoe Saldana, who is known to quotes Tupac“Me Against the World” to rally Pratt’s base.

Is there a chance that Nintendo will change its mind? If anyone can withstand public outcry and/or ignore it, it’s a company that seems to almost got off with the denial of his fan base. But who knows. The Fates work in mysterious ways, just like Pratt himself. tell you“It just dawned on me that I stole a quarter from those who wanted to play Super Mario Bros. It came true that I can be the voice of Mario, but I obviously stole someone’s wish, so I’m just waiting for this series of knuckles of karma to fall on me.

Update 2:25 pm ET: 06/06/2022: Nintendo has now given us our first teaser from the upcoming Mario movie starring Chris Pratt, and the Japanese company is set to reveal the full trailer later today during Comic-Con. Sadly, Mario’s entire ass seems to be missing right now. While it is not clear what Pratt is, who clearly loves his assthinks about it.
