How the Medium is an immersive horror game with a DualSense wireless controller – PlayStation Blog

Hey! I’m Shimon Erdmansky, Producer of Bloober Team, and I’m excited to tell you more about The Medium, which is coming to PlayStation 5 on September 3rd.

For those who have not heard of the game, The Medium is a third-person psychological horror game that features innovative dual-reality gameplay – essentially, you can play in two worlds at the same time. This unique twist on a single-player split-screen game is only possible on next-gen hardware like the PS5.

You play as Marianne, a medium who lives in two worlds: our world and the world of hostile spirits. At the beginning of the game, Marianne is haunted by a strange vision: a little girl is killed on the lake. She concludes that she can learn the truth about the vision in an abandoned resort hotel. Once there, she discovers that the place was a scene of horrific tragedy many years ago, and hides a dark secret that only a medium like her can unravel.

Using Marianna’s unique psychic abilities, you must uncover deeply disturbing secrets, solve intriguing double reality puzzles, survive encounters with sinister spirits while exploring two realities at the same time. An immersive soundtrack, composed by Arkadiusz Reikowski of the Bloober Team and co-written by Silent Hill composer Akira Yamoaka, will accompany you on your journey.

DualSense Controller and Dual Reality Horror

On PS5, we take full advantage of the console’s DualSense wireless controller to delve deeper into the mystery of Hotel Niwa.

Our goal is to make you feel Marianne’s reaction to what is happening as she explores and interacts with the game world through tactile feedback. For example, when she uses her Spirit Shield ability, you can literally feel in your hands dozens of moths from the spirit world crashing into the barrier.

Another example is Marianne’s Out of Body ability, which allows you to leave the physical body and explore only as a spirit. It’s a bit like diving: you won’t last long in such a state, in the end you will suffocate if you do not return. Thus, the longer you stay out of your body, the faster you will feel the controller pulsating, giving you a hint when to get back.

Adaptive triggers not only increase the level of immersion, but also make the controls more intuitive. When you start charging Spirit Blast, the attacking ability of a medium, the trigger will resist at first, but gradually weaken until it can be fully pulled – this means that the explosion is also fully charged and ready to discharge.

These are just a few examples of how the DualSense controller will work when playing The Medium. on PS5. We also include support for controller speaker, touchpad, lightbar, and motion controls.

You can expect a lot of carefully curated moments in the story, augmented by gamepad features … but we obviously won’t spoil them. We’ve got a couple of tricks up our sleeve until you play the game yourself on PS5 on September 3rd. Learn more about The Medium. coming soon and thanks for reading!
