How Minecraft Legends transforms classic Minecraft ideas into brand new forms

  • Minecraft legends is a new game that brings action strategy elements to the Minecraft universe.
  • Minecraft legends recontextualizes familiar mobs and tools and gives you new ways to use them.
  • We spoke with two producers about the game to find out more ahead of the April 18 launch.

At first sight, Minecraft legends might seem like a bold twist in a new direction, but rest assured this new strategy title still incorporates all the familiar elements of an epochal survival title – you just might not notice right away. You can expect to see all your favorite resources, mobs, and tools, but in a brand new strategy game setting – and even the 4v4, PvP mode that was featured in today’s Developer_Direct demo.

So what Minecraft legends? The new game, developed by Mojang Studios with partner Blackbird Interactive, features a brand new story campaign and a new PvP mode. Play through the campaign alone or with friends, or take part in a 4v4 match to destroy the enemy team by destroying their base and building your own. It sounds very different than the original Minecraft, but, pardon the pun, it’s built from many of the same blocks.

Of course the key to mine craft are procedurally generated maps that offer a unique experience every time you jump into a new game. Minecraft legends is no different, creating new maps to conquer for each new battle. Traditionally all on one side in classic mine craft server (or at least they should to be), but Minecraft legendsthe trick is that the map’s resources are competitive and its terrain is the key to your progress – both must be used to defeat the enemy team.

Talking to Xbox Wire Minecraft legends Executive Producer Dennis Rice and Blackbird Interactive Producer Lee Pederson explain how Minecraft legends uses randomly generated maps in both campaign and multiplayer modes to shake up the traditional PvP experience:

“It’s not like your traditional multiplayer situation where you have multiple cards. Every time you play PvP, the strategy you want to use to win may be different from the one you had in the previous game,” says Rhys. “When we added these procedurally generated dynamics with variety, it really started to feel like mine craft. The chaotic fun really shined and we wanted to embrace that chaos.”

Be full of resources

When creating each multiplayer map, resources that you can use in combat will appear in random areas, and some of them are more unique and useful than others. You will have to decide what strategy is best to use against the enemy team based on where you build your base and what resources are around it.

“Every game is a new scene and it has different environmental issues,” Pederson explains. “So when building your base, you can, for example, take advantage of being on top of a mountain, or build a tower behind one of them to hide it. You’re going to have to really tweak your strategy based on what the world is generating for you.”

Rice adds that it could be a Redstone, Diamond, or Iron strategy: each resource offers different units and upgrades to craft, and what you have can drastically change how you gain an advantage over the enemy. You will need to change how you progress through the game depending on what you can secure to get ahead in those early game moments.

“You just don’t know what’s going to happen, so you might want to change your strategy and go with, say, the Redstone strategy, because that’s what’s closest to you,” he adds.

Crowd rule(s)

Not only the environment can provide resources. Minecraft legends includes a variety of familiar mobs, from the classic Creeper to Nether Piglins that will attack anyone who passes through their territory. They all carry important items and can be used to build your winnings in a number of ways.

Some mine craft Enemies like skeletons and zombies are also here, but this time they are on your side and you can take advantage of their abilities too. Flavored mine craft players will have an idea of how all these mobs will act (and attack) but will need to adjust to how useful they can be in this brand new context.

“Creepers will always explode, but now you have the ability to use creepers. […] and tell him to go in a certain direction,” explains Rice. “Piglins are annoying in PvP, but they are necessary because they have the items you need. [use to] Update. On the other hand, they can attack you, so until you implement your strategy, they can thwart it if you’re not careful.”

While the fight is on the front line Minecraft legends, there is a role for every player, from planning massive sieges against the enemy to simply exploring the map. Rhys adds that you may naturally gravitate towards a specific role within a four-man team, and you can choose what to do based on your personal preference, whether it’s brandishing swords against enemies or hunting down a specific resource for your base.

All about this database

As expected by this point, just like the classic mine craftcreating things is really a huge part of your time spent in Minecraft legends. Establishing a base and ensuring it can withstand enemy attacks is just as important as besieging it. Once you’ve built the basic structure, it’s time to get creative with ways to deter intruders. Build additional walls for enemies to pass through, set up hidden traps or set up mobs to protect your base. Remember to also place your upgrade tower in a good location so that your base can be upgraded to withstand even the strongest attacks.

Building your base in Legends serves a new purpose, but has a lot in common with classic components. mine craft building. You need to collect wood, stone, and other world resources to build walls, towers, and gates block by block, and look for ores and hidden treasures to help your team level up. The difference is that you need to think a little more about how your base works rather than how it looks at sunset. However, winning with a cool looking base is an obvious gimmick.

While you’re free to plan your battles (and your defenses), Pederson adds that the PvP experience is designed to be accessible to new players, and you don’t need grand strategy or tons of experience to jump in. “Because the maps are procedurally generated, you don’t have people mastering the map who then dominate the new players that come in,” she adds.

And that’s really the point of how Minecraft legends can feel so akin mine craft, despite being part of an entirely different genre. Like the original, Legends doesn’t just contain random elements – it builds its entire personality around them, rewarding players for working with what they have rather than doing the same thing every time. .

Pederson puts it very simply – terms that almost seem like a mantra for game design in general: “Every time, everyone gets a new experience.”

Minecraft Legends releases April 18th Windows PC (Day 1 with PC Game Pass), Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One (Day 1 with Xbox Game Pass), Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation, Steam, and Nintendo Switch.
