You’d be forgiven for forgetting the Curse of the Sea Rat. The self-proclaimed “Ratoidvania” – a pun that, despite our best efforts, we can’t approve of – ran a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign back in 2020 and was quickly confirmed for release in 2021. Obviously this release date was not respected, but it looks like the rat is back as the new trailer gives a closer look at the game’s four playable characters and resets the release date to 2023.
This new trailer (found above) gives us a fresh look at the layout of the Ratoidvania game (no, it doesn’t stick), as you’ll play as one of four characters – David Douglas, Buffalo Calf, Buss, or Akane Yamakawa – as you fight through a maze. filled with enemies trying to return to their human form. There is a slight dissonance here between the 2D drawn characters and the 3D environment, which at the moment we are not quite happy with. Again, this is a game about people turning into rats, so it would make sense if the world wasn’t what it seems.
Along with the new trailer, publishers PQube and developers Petoons Studio have shared some of the features we can expect to find in the game, the full list of which can be found below.
– Generous art and animation –
A massive cast of characters come to life with a vibrant, hand-drawn art style inspired by classic animated films and the golden age of 2D platforming.
