Our destiny, as Switch owners, is to endure a “mixed” time with third-party games. Is not all bad, but if you are a Star Wars fan, we have LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga and Star Wars: Hunters on the way, on top of all the retro reissues we’ve had over the years.
Is there more on the horizon? May be. It was confirmed today that Respawn Entertainment is releasing three Star Wars games to be published by EA. An excellent (albeit a little hasty and buggy) development Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and it has a sequel – there were rumors that it will be presented in the window in the coming months. In addition, the studio is also working on a first-person shooter in IP.
A Star Wars strategy game is finally here, led by Respawn’s new studio Bit Reactor. This is interesting since Bit Reactor was created by Firaxis veterans, including senior staff with experience in earlier Civilization and XCOM games.
So, can we hope for any of this on Switch? A Jedi Fallen Order sequel is likely to be a big no, as we haven’t even had a hint that the original is coming to Switch. Using the Unreal Engine and having problems running it on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One also helps rule this out. From a first-person shooter perspective, maybe Little chance; we had although a disappointing port Apex Legends on a switch, for example.
The best chance we might have is a strategy game, a genre that is relatively well-suited to scale on a variety of systems. We have several major strategy games ported to the Nintendo system, as well as the upcoming Marvel Midnight Suns on the way.
We’ll be watching for further details; no doubt later this year there will be disclosures and more details.
Which of these Star Wars projects is your favorite?
