According to Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser, the new OLED Nintendo Switch is a “solid start” after an impressive month of release, with the Switch reclaiming its position as the best-selling gaming console in the current US market.
Nintendo sold 711,000 Switch consoles in the US in October, of which 314,000 are OLED models. The Switch family of systems was the top-selling console in the US for 33 straight months until September 2021, when the PS5 first hit the top of the charts. thanks to the OLED display, Nintendo is at the top again.
Speaking with Washington PostBowser explains that October 2021 sales are not far behind the same period last year, which grew thanks to the “anomaly” that was the COVID-19 pandemic:
“October this year is only 3 percent lower than last year’s sales, which I think we can all agree on was that the year was a bit abnormal when it comes to overall hardware sales. So we think this is a good start for the OLED model. … We also think that this is a very strong indicator of productivity that we can count on during the holiday season. “
In the same discussion, Bowser confirmed that “many” of the OLED Switch devices sold were purchased by those who already owned the Switch system as a second console for themselves or their families.
Bowser also shared more details on the impressive launch of Metroid Dread. He reports that 854,000 copies of the new game were sold in the US in October, explaining that the game received the strongest launch of any game in the series to date in the US.
