You can’t keep the Game Boy at bay as the humble laptop is still being used for various projects and its game library is also growing. A small number of dedicated developers and publishers have taken to working with the system, and now you can try out one particular upcoming release – Car.

Announced last year, this is a dystopian tale in which an early aptitude test determines your destiny and career prospects, sort of like an 11+ test in some British schools, but it turned out to be… well, 11.

This world is hierarchical.

It has always been so – the few powerful over the masses – but here we fully accept this infallible truth. In our society, we can find our place in the world with a simple test; we can determine where you fit in society with unparalleled effectiveness, and we can place you there to ensure you can reach your full potential, no matter how high or low.

This is what is good for the car.

In The Machine, you will have the opportunity to play through many different storylines in the original dystopian world, reliving each playthrough as a factory worker, police officer or someone else. Explore the inner workings of a giant machine and the people who inhabit it in the throes of choices that could drastically change the future. The Machine is a non-linear game with multiple endings based on your choices and will be playable on Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance consoles.

Now the game has new website which has a link for pre-orders – right now the page is showing as “sold out”, but don’t worry as orders shouldn’t open until February 16th. Alternatively, you can play the demo in your browser, which will give you an idea of the tone and approach of the gameplay.

This is an intriguing project; Are any of you Game Boy fans planning to check this out?
