Today’s update for Deep Rock Galaxy includes an update to optimize the game for Xbox Series X|S. We love these new consoles because they make the game shine, and the updated hardware makes it much easier for us to deal with creating caves and more enemies. General, DRG now it seems like the game is much smoother on current generation consoles. If you have an Xbox Series X|S, it’s time to play Deep Rock Galactic. And if you have a Game Pass subscription, you can download it right now.
Some of you may not have played Deep Rock Galaxyso let’s start with a brief overview of the game.
What Deep Rock Galaxy?
DRG is a 4-player co-op shooter where you play as dwarf miners on the planet Hoxes. Each mission takes place in a procedurally generated cave with 100% destructible terrain. Over the years, the game has been enriched with new missions, biomes, weapons, and more. We continue to add new content to the game in the form of Seasons, the most recent of which is Season 02: Rival Escalation.
You can play the game in single player mode when the friendly BOSCO robot joins you on missions, but the game shines when you play in co-op. There is a large and friendly community of players who are very welcoming to newcomers to Greenbeard. Thus, the best experience is usually achieved by going to the server list or opening your game to other players.
Our Xbox development experience
Many of the Xbox services have allowed us to add features to the Xbox version that we could not have done otherwise. We’re a relatively small studio, so we can’t do crossplay on all platforms yet. But with Xbox, we were able to cross-play between Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and the Windows 10/11 version of DRG using the Xbox account system. So you can play with your friends no matter what platform they’re on in the Xbox ecosystem. And with Xbox Cloud Saves, your progress transfers between Xbox and Windows 10/11. The ease of integrating these features into the game has greatly simplified the development of an Xbox game. And making the Xbox Series X|S version meant taking advantage of the Xbox features that we’ve already implemented for the Xbox One and Windows 10/11 versions.
This new version will be very similar if you played the Xbox One version on Xbox Series X|S. But we managed to squeeze in one new feature available on recent consoles.
If you have a 120Hz TV, you can now play Deep Rock Galaxy at up to 120 fps on Xbox Series X|S. Adding an option for a higher frame rate looks like we can offer some of the benefits of PC gaming to our Xbox players.
While 120Hz does not work with native 4K, the game uses dynamic scaling, rendering at the highest possible resolution depending on hardware and game state before upscaling to 4K. And if you don’t have a 120Hz TV, we’ve left the performance and fidelity mode on so you can choose between frame rate or resolution.
What is going to happen?
Whether you’re new to Greenbeard or a longtime Greybeard player, the following updates Deep Rock Galaxy will be for everyone. On September 15, you will be able to join the Oktoberfest celebration in the game. And later in the fourth quarter, we will release Season 03, which will bring a brand new theme and a lot of unique content to the game. Join our Discord or follow us on Twitter if you want to stay in the know DRG. We have dedicated Xbox channels on Discord if you want to find others to play with, talk to the developers directly, or report an issue.
If you’re still playing on Xbox One, don’t worry; we don’t plan to drop support for the Xbox One version anytime soon. We still want as many people as possible to play the game, so we do our best to ensure DRG works well on latest generation consoles.
