Cartoony co-op shooter Explore and Destroy Coming Soon to Switch

Spike Chunsoft has announced that they will be releasing the strategic co-op shooter Research and Destroy on Switch on April 25th!

You may have read the title and thought, “Wait, how do you balance turn-based combat with gameplay?” Well, developer Implausible Industries said that you plan your attacks well in advance before breaking through hordes of enemies and shooting them down. How it works is yet to be fully seen, but we are excited about the prospect.

This shadowed shooter also features online and couch co-op, which means you and a friend can get together at any time. You can also enter and exit the game at any time.

Spike Chunsoft shared even more details about the game with us:

Brand new strategic shooting based on Super Science. Explore and destroy (RAD) is a turn-based action game with simultaneous local or online co-op. Control three brilliant super scientists as you RESEARCH and develop strange new weapons and gadgets to DESTROY the hordes of supernatural forces that nearly wiped out humanity.

one) Research: Gain new insight into the Supernatural threat with vivisections on the battlefield, then develop radical upgrades for every strange weapon and adorable gadget.
2) Destroy: Plan ahead, then run and shoot in a combination of turn-based strategy and real-time shooting – every second counts.
3) Co-op play: Customize the look of your scientists, then log in and out of online and local co-op games with friends at any time.
4) Campaign: Adapt your guerrilla science tactics to manage the campaign map and search for the Supernatural Source – no two playthroughs are the same.

The game was originally shown at the 2017 BitSummit event in Japan and won the Popular Selection Award which is quite special as it is chosen by the members!

Visually, it looks like it’s fresh from the late GameCube era, or even the early PS3. Shaded visuals bring some lightness and vibrancy, while colorful explosions and quirky gadgets are enhanced by the cartoony and slightly jagged aesthetic.

Chris Willacy, Daniel Markevitch and Kees Gagentaan, who work for a Japanese developer, expressed their excitement about the upcoming launch of Research and Destroy:

“We are incredibly excited about the upcoming release Explore and destroyand that the release will be on all major gaming platforms.

We, as a micro-studio, have never had more than five full-time employees at the same time. Because of this, we all had to wear a lot of hats on the project, which made it very fun, fresh and exciting for us. We hope that the sense of fun and playfulness will turn into an enjoyable experience for players Explore and destroy. Even until the end of development, there was a lot of laughter in the office due to some situations that we found ourselves in during the game.

We took inspiration from a wide variety of 20th century comics and television cartoons to create the look and feel of the game world. Bringing a cartoonish art style to the game is something we’ve been wanting to do for a long time. Creating “weird science” for a turn-based action game allowed us to come up with all sorts of unique weapons and fun gadgets while adding a healthy dose of humor to the game. As you play, keep an eye out for lots of silly references, goofy dad jokes, and light-hearted Easter eggs. We had a great time putting them in and trying to create something that could say something but not be too serious about how it’s said. We look forward to having you join us on April 25th.”

Explore and Destroy will be available on the Switch eShop next week on April 25 for $19.99. Will you be downloading this to play with a friend? Let us know about it in the comments.
