Building a TTRPG-style world with Citizen Sleeper’s Refuge

Hello again, I’m Gareth Damian Martin, (mostly) solo developer of the indie hit Game Pass. Citizen Sleeper. Back in July I was here on Xbox Wire to talk about Fluxour first episodic update for the game and I’m back today to asylumthe second episode of our 3-episode free downloadable content!

asylum picks up where Flux stopped in the depths of the refugee crisis that threatens the Eye of Erlynne space station. But at the start of this update, a shocking event shifts the balance of power on the Oka and forces players and characters they’ve teamed up with to ponder their future on the station.

Bye Flux it was a race against time, filled with hard choices and action under pressure, asylum it’s a slower, more exploratory episode. In it, you gain access to a refugee fleet and meet characters from the moons of the gas giant named Ember, located elsewhere in the Helion solar system. It means asylum this is an opportunity for me to tell you more about the wider universe Citizen Sleeperand engage in classic role-playing world-building activities.


And yet, like all Citizen SleeperI like to do things a little differently. Although I have been known to enjoy spending many hours reading codices and lore records for such as mass effect as well as Destiny 2, as a developer, I often prefer that my characters control my worldbuilding. AT asylum this means that you will come to understand the larger context of the Helion system through the refugees you meet and the ships they travel on.

Like many aspects Citizen Sleeper, (from dice to focusing on player choice) this approach is inspired by TTRPG (or Tabletop Role Playing Games for the uninitiated). A good gamemaster will never just dump a ton of knowledge on a player in your typical campaign or session, so instead they should use the main tool at their disposal, characters and environment description, to tell the player about the world.

In Refuge, this means bringing the Helion system to the Eye through the voices and personalities of three characters: the reluctant leader Sol, the steel engineer Peter, and the enigmatic Aki. I really hope you enjoy meeting these three and learning more about them and where they came from in this issue. I have worked diligently to make them compelling windows into their worlds as well as distinct personalities, and as always, our artist Guillaume Singlen has skilfully depicted their existence.

And this is just the beginning, because Citizen Sleeper is a game set in a world that I still build every day. asylum is the next step in history, but in early 2023 you can expect the final episode in this sequence, which will have far-reaching consequences for the entire solar system and everyone who lives in it.

And after that? Well, that would be too much. After all, a good GM knows how to keep secrets. But let’s just say that the world Citizen Sleeper will continue to grow as long as I have characters to talk about it, new places to send you to, and of course players like you to explore it all.

In the first episode, FLUX, the first ships from the refugee flotilla arrive at the Eye of Erlin in response to pressure in the Helion system. Now, in REFUGE, a strange event has sparked outrage in the Eye’s communities. You will enter the flotilla to try to understand this new threat and help the refugees stabilize their community. The story of the flotilla, the FLUX event, and your Sleeper will wrap up in Episode 3, releasing in early 2023.
