Another Nintendo Console Got An Upgrade, But It’s Been 18 Years Old

You can keep your pants fancy Change OLED models, Chum – for retro fans, the news that the GBA SP is receiving a battery upgrade is probably more exciting (“probably” being the operative word here).

While older Nintendo systems like Game Boy and Game Boy Advance have been subjected to some really fresh unofficial mods over the years – usually focused on overcoming the inherent limitations with the raw screens they shipped with – these upgrades have often had a negative impact on the power consumption of machines.

Case in point; we have a modded GBA SP in the office it has a nice IPS mounted panel that offers a brightness that exceeds even what the legendary model AGS-101 is capable of, but the spare battery we had installed gave up the ghost after an hour.

After about 15 years of use, the battery was probably ready for scrapheap anyway, to be honest, but you got the picture – the mods often result in reduced stamina. Even if you don’t have a modded console, the promise of extra battery life is clearly tempting – and while there are larger batteries available online, they often don’t correspond to the advertised capacity.

Even of grace then to British society RetroSix, which provides not only modified consoles but also sells a wide range of mods and accessories – including a new one 900mAh battery for GBA SP. We put one of these through their rhythms recently and we came out very impressed; we managed to get over six hours of use from a single charge on our modified GBA SP IPS, which is much more than what we had managed with previous aftermarket batteries purchased from eBay. If you run it on a standard GBA SP without a new fancy screen, RetroSix says you can wait up to ten hours of use:

This Rechargeable Battery offers up to ten hours of uninterrupted fun on your Game Boy Advance SP system. Real heavy 900mAh charger and easy to install in your handheld. This isn’t a typical Chinese replacement with fake mAh batteries, but our own battery from a reputable battery factory gets our CleanJuice batteries.

The RetroSix battery is approximately the same size as the original, although we’ve noticed that it’s a tight fit to get in and out of the GBA SP’s battery compartment – but it’s worth the effort, which really gives it your old laptop a new lease of life.

RetroSix also sells 900mAh batteries £ 10.30. If you’re in North America, you can get it from RetroSix’s partner site, Handheld Legend, for $ 10.99.
