Animated God of War Ragnarok Family Portraits Reveal 5 Key Relationships – PlayStation.Blog

Since the launch of the Family Portrait series five weeks ago, we have taken great pleasure in showcasing the work created by this fantastic group of artists. These portraits showcase the key relationships at the heart of God of War Ragnarok.

Now that the series is complete, we have put together a gallery with all five works on God of War Ragnarok website and size them for desktop wallpaper so you can bring the gallery to your home (screen). You can download them together here or get them individually below.

But that’s not all!

We wouldn’t end the series without adding a special touch. Not only did we animate each of the pieces, but we also borrowed Mimir to clarify some of the details of our portrait!

Drew Merritt – The Bear and the Wolf

The portrait of Kratos and Atreus, the bear and the wolf by Drew Merritt reflects the family relationships of our heroes. Father and son endure many trials together in their quest to scatter the ashes of Faye (the wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus) atop the highest peak in all the worlds. After the events of God of War (2018), Kratos and Atreus become the close family that Faye had always hoped for.

But Atreus is no longer a child in God of War Ragnarok. Through tireless training under his father’s watchful and caring eye, he grew into a skilled fighter with the quickness and intelligence of a wolf. Atreus knows that some questions have answers that can only be found outside their frozen home in Midgard.

The snows of Fimbulwinter herald the coming of Ragnarok and mean ever-increasing danger to all the inhabitants of the Nine Worlds. Now more than ever, Kratos must prepare Atreus to fight and survive as he was once taught. Protective and cautious, like a bear guarding its cubs, Kratos will do anything to protect his family.

Emma Rios – Dwarfs

A portrait of gnomes by Emma Rios gives you a glimpse of some new faces next to the familiar Huldra brothers, Brock and Sindri.

Although they have had disagreements in the past, Brock and Sindri have forged not only a business relationship, but also a brotherly bond. Both master smiths, they’ve upgraded Kratos and Atreus’ gear countless times as they needed it. While not without their quirks, Brock and Sindri’s unwavering support has earned them the trust and, dare we say, friendship of Kratos and his son.

Emma’s work also provides a glimpse into Svartalfheim, the home realm of the dwarves. Known for their brilliant engineering and craftsmanship, the inhabitants of this realm are equal parts proud and skilled.

The Dwarves built vast structures of watermills, mines, and forges, skillfully using the environment to create the finest tools, weapons, and armor in all of the Nine Worlds.

We’ve shown Durlin and his wavy little companion Dinner before, but we’ll wait a bit later to introduce you to our new mysterious friend and her very sweet, very wrinkled dog.

Romina Tempest – Heroes of Midgard

The coming of Ragnarok may have heralded the apocalypse, but that doesn’t mean our heroes can’t enjoy the quiet moments between battles.

Romina Tempest’s work depicts an unusually common dinner scene with friends and family. When danger lurks around every corner, it is moments like these, filled with laughter and comfort, that become the most precious and unusual of all.

The relationship between father and son is the heart of our story, but Kratos and Atreus no longer fight to protect only each other. As the classic saying goes, sometimes family is Blue, Dwarf, Head, Son, and God (or two) of War!

Jae Lee – Mother and son

Jae Li’s portrait depicts the goddess Freya holding the body of her lost child Baldur. In the events of God of War (2018), Freya was not only an ally of Kratos and Atreus, but also a friend. Offering her guidance and power over the powerful magic of the Vanir, it was only through her help that father and son were able to complete their quest.

The end of the last game left Kratos with a choice: kill Baldur and end the cycle of parental murder by a child, or respect Freya’s wishes and allow Baldur to take the life of the woman who saved his son. Though Kratos is familiar with the pain of losing a child, he couldn’t stand by when Balder tried to kill his mother.

Although father and son saved Freya’s life, they did so at the cost of her friendship. Vowing revenge on Kratos in her grief, the goddess swore that the price of her son’s death would be paid in blood.

Even though her ex-husband Odin stripped her of her wings and the title of Valkyrie Queen, Freya’s suffering and anger made her a force to be reckoned with.

Sui Ishida – Ases

From the realm of Asgard, Odin and his family rule over the Nine Realms. Despite all his accumulations of knowledge and power, the death of his son Baldur and the arrival of Fimbulwinter mark the Allfather’s inability to prevent the beginning of the prophecy he had been trying to circumvent for so long. He did not want to endure such a failure a second time.

The portrait of Sui Isis depicts Odin in the background, shrouded and protected by his family’s warriors who stand between him and anyone who defies their cause.

While we have yet to meet some of these faces, there are a few aces that Kratos and Atreus have already fought on their way to Jotunheim. The father-son pair eventually killed Balder, as well as Thor’s sons Magni and Modi. These actions not only shed the blood of the most powerful family in the Nine Realms, they also removed important pieces from the board that served as an extension of the will of the Allfather.

Despite these losses, Odin’s most powerful piece remains in play: the most ferocious warrior in all of Asgard, Thor. With the legendary weapon Mjolnir in hand, the infamous glory of the God of Thunder is only matched by the brutal power he wields against anyone who rises up against his family.

As Ragnarok looms on the horizon, the Aesir prepare for war, and the lives Kratos and Atreus took years ago may pay a heavy price.
