Accidentally: Circus Pilgrims played Megalania to the Pope and revived a 6-year-old Undertale meme

It’s great to see the meme finally come to a conclusion, like when Leonardo DiCaprio finally won an Oscar, or when Kingdom Hearts’ Sora was added to Smash Bros last year. We now have another entry in the persistent memes that eventually came to fruition: Dad loves Undertale.

It started back in 2016 when YouTuber MatPat was invited to represent YouTube in an interview with the head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis. It was part of a conference to bring the world together via the Internet, but it doesn’t matter – what matters is that MatPat, when told that it was customary to give the Pope a gift representing his country (United States), he decided to bring … Undertale.

“Undertale represents an evolution for gamers,” says MatPat in the video above, “making it the single best representative of our current community.” He went on to say that games are often portrayed in the media as violent, obnoxious, and criminal, but Undertale epitomizes the good in games: pacifism, kindness, and community. The video doesn’t say, but it’s probably also true that the Pope will probably like a little Sans.

Fast forward to January 5, 2022, when Pope Francis held a general audience that he holds every Wednesday to greet pilgrims. This one, however, was a little different, because about an hour later, a hilarious little rendition of Megalovania – one of Undertale creator Toby Fox’s scores for the play – was waiting for it, accompanied by a performing circus troupe:

And he I loved This. Well, of course, he did it – for a start, this is nonsense, and it would be a little unchristian for him to yawn while doing one of his only duties as Pope. But he clapped his hands!

Unfortunately, it was in this audience that Pope Francis said that people were selfish about pets, not childrenso that’s not all the good news. Maybe he needs to go through Undertale again.
