Accidental: 20 years later on the Super Smash Bros. Melee hidden texture found
Success in Super Smash Bros. Melee (and every other Smash Bros. game) relies on muscle memory. You learn the controls until your thumbs move regardless of your mind, you just have to think and your character attacks, and before you even notice an incoming strike, your shield is up.
This has given many Smash Bros. deep understanding of our fighter’s skill set, as well as the intricacies of each stage. What’s surprising is that we found out that there are certain parts of the classic stages that we never knew about – hidden textures lurking deep in the game’s settings that passed us by again and again.
One such discovery was brought to our attention @Vancity_Primal on Twitter, whose’Package “Clean Stages”The mod removes the details of six iconic battlefields for, you guessed it, the cleanest fight scene. By playing this modified edition of the “Yoshi’s Story” stage, @tiebex_ noted that when removing the frontmost tree from the level, the mod found a small strawberry on the ground – presumably the one that had been sitting there unnoticed since the game’s release in 2001 (so yes, it’s probably don’t eat anymore)
Now we can’t be sure cause behind the hidden placement of strawberries, but we know somewhere the strawberry-loving developer at HAL Labs is smiling now that his big secret is finally out.
But wait, the hidden food mystery doesn’t end there! Replying to the original tweet, @WoodleyMiles was quick to point out that Onette’s stage also has a secret snack hidden in the bushes. In a YouTube video from GameBoyGamer below, the hidden food in the game is not just limited to fruits, oh no. Looking inside one of the plant pots in the scene, you’ll find a rice ball hidden among the flowers. somebody was hungry during production.
It may not seem like much – strawberries hidden behind trees usually game-changing mechanics – but it’s weird to think that a game we’ve played so much over the last 20 years still has hidden details we never knew about. Now it’s time to hunt down something else in this virtual buffet.
