A demo version of the unannounced game Gex appeared on the network

It looks like a demo of an unannounced Gex Jr. game has surfaced online.

A short demo posted on YouTube by justz00t has been added to by a user who found an unannounced game on an old CD-R.

According to the user who posted the demo on the archive site, the CD-R on which it was found is dated January 25, 2001.

In the demo, Gex Jr. spews out pop culture references in the same way he does in the main series. “I’m your father, Luke” can be heard after a few seconds – a misquote from Star Wars. Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.

Late last year, Square Enix restored the rights to ’90s platform games in European territories, though nothing has come of the acquisition so far.

The first Gex is a platform game developed by Crystal Dynamics. It was originally released for 3DO in 1995; The PlayStation and Sega Saturn ports of the game were later developed by Beam Software, while the PC version was licensed by Microsoft and released for Microsoft Windows.

Last game in the series Gex: Deep Gecko was released for the PlayStation in 1999.

If the date of this leaked demo is correct, it can be assumed that Gex Jr. was to be a continuation of the series starring a new younger version of Gex.

However, by January 2001, the PlayStation 2 was already gaining momentum, so it’s possible that Square stopped development of the platformer due to its status as a PS1 game.

In 2015, Square launched the Square Enix Collective platform, which would allow independent developers to promote the company’s games using some of Square’s franchises, including Gex.

It is not clear if the program is still running, however no Gex games have appeared so far.
