2022 looks great for tactical games on Switch

Nintendo already has a number of high-profile games planned for the Switch in 2022, and when you add third-party developers, it really looks very exciting.

One genre that looks particularly good in the period ahead is tactical games, specifically turn-based strategy tactics. To me, the coming year on Switch looks like it’s going to be full of handheld gaming in a comfy chair, taking your time and pondering clever moves to outsmart my enemies – like a good game of chess, but with a lot of imagination and great additions. game design is scattered in parts.

Since tactical games may be my favorite type right now – perhaps a reflection of age and dull reflexes in platformers – here are a few confirmed Switch titles that look pretty amazing and are right on my 2022 wishlist …

Triangle Strategy – March 4, 2022

The team that brought us the brilliant Octopath Traveler takes the same HD-2D approach that looks great on the Nintendo system (and elsewhere, of course).

The title is very reminiscent of classic Final Fantasy Tactics, but with a lot of modern touches and interesting storytelling and selection mechanics. The demo looked very encouraging last year, and with various adjustments and improvements based on fan feedback, I’m optimistic that this will be a gem.

Advance Wars 1 + 2: Re-Boot Camp – Spring 2022

Originally scheduled for release in December 2021, Nintendo and developer WayForward made the decision to move it to Spring 22 – listing My Nintendo Store UK (this list currently still alive) assuming arrival on April 8th.

As the name suggests, it combines the content of the first two games in the series, but with a completely revamped and fresh graphics and no doubt some other quality of life improvements. From a personal point of view, this is a series that I have heard a lot about but have not experienced, so I look forward to trying this modernized version.

Mario + Rabbids Spark of Hope – 2022

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle was an unexpected collaboration with Ubisoft in the early days of Switch, but the end result was amazing; The Donkey Kong Adventure DLC was also a great addition.

With some aspects borrowed from games like XCOM, he nevertheless carved his own path with character-specific clever abilities, along with some of Mario’s moves and attacks. It’s downright adorable, and there’s little reason for anything other than optimism about what a sequel might deliver.

Metal Slug Tactics – 2022

When it was first shown for PC in the summer of 2021, a lot of people, especially those of us with a few gray hairs on our heads, clamored for the Switch version. Unsurprisingly, publisher Dotemu is doing its best, which means the Switch will host a slew of classic action movies Metal Slug, as well as this new tactical solution.

Again, this is a stylized isometric perspective, but with the crazy military tone of iconic intellectual property. It looks awesome, and the trailers so far point to the prospect of some great boss battles.

Midnight Suns Marvel – 2022

As someone who jumps happily and enjoys a silly escape from life in Marvel games, he ranks at the top of the list in terms of expected titles. It was developed by Firaxis Games (well known for the XCOM series) and its postponement for the second half of the year (it was originally scheduled for March) will hopefully allow it to be fully polished upon arrival.

The concept, IP, and mechanics look enticing and my only concern is the performance on the Switch. XCOM 2 Collection might be a little rough on the Nintendo system, but if this one had a Switch version planned from day one, we hope it has solid optimizations.

Of course, there are other games to come, and no doubt some good tactical indie / strategy games just for download. Based on how busy Intelligent Systems are in the 3DS era, we have yet another Fire Emblem the title also follows from 2019’s Fire Emblem: Three Houses, so it might be a surprise for the game in 2022.

As you can see, the coming year can be terrific for this genre; let us know what you are waiting for in the poll and comments below!
