Of course, now Indie-Penance Day it has become such an instituteoption in the gaming industry since its inception this morning, that people are starting to be nostalgic for the whole thing. To address this need, here are ten indie games that you probably haven’t seen before that evoke past game eras.
OmegaBot gives that cozy atmosphere of comfortable afternoons playing Amiga platform games. Other than, well, much busier. Also check out those colors – the games haven’t looked that way since Arcubalenu Islands. This is all the work of a lone developer, which is damn impressive. The goal is to release it early next year.
The ghost hunter / The ghost hunter looks so spooky-cool! A blobber, that seems too Dungeon Master, but rendered in what appear to be schematics. It makes me think a little Shock System, Captive, Xenomorph and probably most of all, Cyberdrone. But you can’t be 100 years old like me, and think of something more modern. Anyway, this looks so good, and I hope it comes out this year as promised.
Hack Grid in the same way it brings me back to my youth in the Stone Ages game, with its CRT aesthetic. I call it a “love letter to DOS,” which is sweet, even though she had better not need me to edit my config.sys and autoexec.bat. It’s a puzzle game in which each type of piece has its own set of rules, which makes my brain hurt just to think – but you don’t have to think, you might buy, that it’s already out. In fact, it now has a 35% discount, meaning it will cost you a minuscule two dollars.
Dark sheep it does not drive us out of this backseat. In fact, we’re even ahead of the DOS era above, and this time a spooOOOoooky one. It’s sort of Sokoban, but this time the “love letter” is written on Commodore 64. (The only letter I would ever send my C64 would be a break, for lack of charge Pitstop II for the ninth time in a row.) It came out a couple of months ago on Steam, and is currently less than $ 3.
Time Bandit evokes something more of the late 90s for me (and not 1985, as you might expect), PSX-ish art, even with the genres of physics developers couldn’t just dream of then. It’s designed to feel like the kind of game you might find on an old demo disc, and crikey, only this concept deserves success overnight. The game is an anti-capitalist statement on labor exploitation and environmental catastrophes, but it is also a collection of time control mechanics. Part 1: Machine Appendices trying to be out sometime this year. There is a demo version that you can play now, via Itch.
Star Explorers era mentioned last time Kotaku didn’t pay enough attention, but during this I committed a sin. I made a reference to “retro No Man’s Sky,” which seems rather enters under the crawl of its developer. And quite so, ever since Star Explorers it was in development before NMS it was announced, and then it fell cruelly under its shadow – it’s worth giving it away this article a reading. Why did I introduce a three-year-old a second time? Because it’s on track to receive its 5.0 update, which is going to be a major one, then now might be a good time to jump in, especially while it’s less than $ 4.
There May Be Ninety Nine Of Us, But We Will Win In Ninety Nine Rounds! win the best name of the day, clearly. He also wins the Steam image pack, which is black Comic Sans on a white background, which is worse than a homicide. This complete detachment is the work of one Damien Crawford, and it’s apparently an RPG puzzle. ”where there’s no RNG and it’s about running. ”I’m not sure who this was going to get to, but it’s probably not one from this planet.
Tentacle Typer is a text editor, and you can’t get more back than a text editor, unless you release your game just by the oscilloscope. Except an RPG text editor, and you’re a giant betentacled monster, and you have a magical mechanical typewriter, and you can interact with the game world by writing whatever you want. IT’S WHY WE ARE HERE, PEOPLE. On Earth, I mean. We evolved to get to the point where someone did Tentacle Typer.
Alpha particle from Unknown Function reminds me of that fantastic top-down art that you would get in late Amiga games, although certainly of a higher fidelity. The game also resembles something that was fast-paced from action games, although this apparently starts more slowly before things get so busy. Play as a particle –who must be one of the youngest player characters in the history of the game – solving puzzles and spinning at some impressive speeds.
Knights Bahnsen remember the glorious days of Speccy! Of course, I know, you poor Americans never knew the true love that was the Sinclair Spectrum, but trust me, it was when the games were good and pure. I honestly don’t know anything about the Bahnsen Knights other than that. ”a pixel-pulp adventure with a world of religious fanatics, F5 laps is Ford Sierras. “But look at this art. It’s really against the law to want more than that.
