Today Apple has released iOS 14.6, which includes some new features for AirTags, support for subscriptions to Apple Podcasts, and most importantly, a number of major security updates for virtually all modern iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch devices.

The new consumer functionality in iOS 14.6 are updates that allow Family Sharing for the Apple Card and subscriptions in Apple Podcasts. Meanwhile, AirTags has also gotten a bit of attention thanks to its ability to “add an email address instead of a phone number to AirTag and Find My Network Accessories.”

And for Apple Music users, iOS 14.6 also includes support for Dolby Atmos and lossless audio, which should both live a few months later.

However, the most urgent part of iOS 14.6 is a a whole bunch of security updates addressing a wide range of exploits ranging from things like malicious audio files that could allow hackers to hack code or reveal personal information to forums in iOS Core services, which were previously vulnerable to malware that could potentially concede root privileges to bad actors.

The range of Apple security updates in iOS 14.6 is so significant that it covers almost every major mobile device Apple has made in the last five years, including every iPhone 6s and later, every iPad Pro, every iPad Air 2 and more. later, every fifth-gen iPad is later, every iPad Mini 4 is later, and every seventh-generation iPod Touch is later.

So even if you don’t have an Apple Card or use Apple Podcasts, it is highly recommended that every iPhone or iPad owner update to iOS 14.6 as soon as possible.
