The ZOIA 2.0 update unlocks more power for modular effects

The Empress Effects ZOIA it was already very powerful if you ask me. His son modular approach at the conception of the DIY effects basically let your imagination run wild. But, there is a handful of patches in my library that really push the pedal to its limits and maximize the CPU. Sometimes, they even cause the pedal to block and crash. But, this should be less of a concern now with firmware update 2.0.

There are a bunch of small improvements to it ZOIA, but the header feature is code-optimized that the company aims to reduce the average CPU load by a patch of 24 percent. This means that a small granular ball with eight different loops playing at the same time will no longer carry the ZOIA to its figurative knees. In fact, you may now be able to build larger and more complex patches. Maybe you can push it to 10 cycles!

Another major addition is a CV mixer / attenuverter module. This allows you to call in the exact amount of control voltage you want to go into various other modules or even combine several incoming CV sources and use the average of their output to control, say the rate on a tremolo. So you can have a trem that gets faster over time on a macro scale controlled by an LFO, but the rate can vary in a certain range to a micro scale based on the force of choice.

Some modules such as the ADSR envelope and audio mixer have had some new views. And modules such as the ring modulator and delay line have received small functional updates, such as the ability to control time delay with CVs and accept negative CV signals for lower frequencies.

Unfortunately there is still no sampling module. The company says they are still working, but there is no ETA when it could finally land.

ZOIA firmware 2.0 is available now as a free download.
