The FTC is investigating the acquisition of Amazon by MGM

Amazon’s purchase from MGM it could take a lot longer than planned. The information sources they say the Federal Trade Commission has launched an “in-depth” investigation into Amazon MGM’s acquisition of the potential for antitrust abuse. Officials are concerned about the potential for the acquisition to “illegally stimulate” Amazon’s influence in the supply of goods and services, not just the content it produces.

MGM declined to comment. We asked Amazon for comments.

A probe would not be completely unexpected. The FTC and the Department of Justice agreed to a review of the agreement when Lina Khan was a frequent critic of Big Tech named as president of the FTC. Amazon expects a crackdown, and it’s gone so far demanded Khan’s refusal in future cases. He is not expected to bow to the MGM investigation.

This will not necessarily result in the FTC blocking the agreement. It could also impose conditions on the purchase, and could easily delay a finalized agreement by several months. It took more than a year for Google end up buying Fitbit – Amazon may have to wait a similar amount of time to own MGM, and this is provided that there are no major hurdles.
