You no longer need to spend over $ 200 on a quality pair of Active Noise Canceling (ANC) headphones. If you don’t mind opting for an older model, we highly recommend the Sony WH-1000XM3. A few weeks after they dropped to $ 190, wireless headphones dropped another $ 20. Best buy to a new low of $ 170.
In September 2018, we gave the XM3 a 94 rating for their excellent sound and comfort. Inside is a dedicated QN1 noise cancellation chip that does the hard work of blocking out background noise and amplifying the sound. For those not accustomed to ANC, you may even notice new sounds on your favorite tracks. Audiophiles will also take advantage of the settings offered through the Sony app, which allows fine tuning of the sound.
It would be an oversight if we didn’t mention the successors to the XM3, the XM4. The new earbuds have two main additions: automatic pause and seamless listening across multiple devices. Given that they are currently priced at $ 348, this is unlikely to be an obstacle.
The XM3’s design is also eye-catching. Black in-ear headphones with bronze inserts in the Sony logo and USB-C. port. In our tests, we found the soft cushioning around the cushions and headband to be significantly more comfortable than some of the alternatives. You can also fold them when not in use, making them ideal for travel. The XM3 offers around 30 hours of battery life, which is more than enough for regular passengers. A well-charged USB-C connection also provides five hours of charging in just 10 minutes.
