When the original Get the knives released in 2019, it received such a strong, mostly positive response that it was no surprise when a sequel was eventually announced. glass bow, which recently began its week-long theatrical run before it hits Netflix on December 23rd.is the first of two Get the knives sequels this director/writer Ryan Johnson has already been involved to make for the streamer. Both films and much of Johnson’s previous work (for better or worse) has been praised for playing with the expectations of the genre or franchise in which he works.
But within the recent history of TermJohnson acknowledged that Get the knives lacks a solid foundation on where to go next compared to his earlier films. “[Mystery’s] not an expansive genre,” he said. While it has acclaimed countless adaptations of detective novel series such as Agatha Christie, the genre itself is not known for its innovation. “It’s not thousands of classic films like film noir where there seems to be an unlimited amount of things to learn from. […] In terms of real innovation in the genre, you really go back to the same games.”
On that front, Johnson said he would look to hidden gems in the genre for inspiration. But he also talked about wanting not to rest on his laurels, especially since he’s also working on Poker Face, standalone detective show for Peacock starring Natasha Lyonne. “Daniel [Craig] and I’ve talked about it a lot, like the moment we feel like we’re turning the crank of another one of them, we have to stop.” When asked by Deadline, Craig expressed the same opinion: the duo will continue to make Get the knives films if there is a demand. But they both agreed to pull the cord if the franchise started to look like obligation not what they liked to do.
Johnson is currently in the early stages of writing Get knives 3, and has been since the press tour for glass bow. Calling it his “most exciting creative thing” to date, he teased that he wanted to make the film as different as possible from its predecessors. “Now it is very important with everyone, and especially with the third, to feel a little scary and dangerous,” he said. “You have to shake the box.”
