Your two choices for making connections are wired via USB or wireless via Bluetooth. The first is pretty self-explanatory, but for the second you’ll need to do some simple Bluetooth pairing to make it all work together. There are many differences between the devices, but overall the matching processes are all very similar.
On the DualSense Wireless Controller that comes with the PS5, hold down the PS5 button (between the analog sticks) and the Create button (to the left of the trackpad) for a few seconds to enter Bluetooth pairing mode. Tthe area around the trackpad will start to flash blue when you have done it successfully.
On the Xbox Wireless Controller, there’s a dedicated app button at the top, right next to the USB-C port. If you hold down this, after a few seconds you will see the Xbox button start flashing, which indicates that the controller is in pairing mode. You can then complete the process on the other device.
Connect a Controller to your Computer
For connection to Windows and macOS, your best bet in terms of stability and comfort is a USB cable. Insert one end into the USB-C port of the DualSense or Xbox controller, and the other end into your desktop or laptop. The cable you will need will depend on whether your computer has USB-A or USB-C ports — just choose the cable that suits you (or buy an adapter and even a cable).
Both Windows and macOS should automatically detect the controller once it is inserted, whether you are using Sony or Microsoft. There is no additional software or specific drivers that you need to install, although of course not all the applications on your computer will be able to work with the gamepad you just connected.
If you prefer Bluetooth wireless freedom, you need to do so mating first. From Configuration in Windows, go to Devices, then choose Bluetooth and other devices and Add Bluetooth or other device to start searching for your console controller. From System Preferences in macOS, choose Bluetooth to start the connection process. If your controller is in pairing mode, it should appear in the list of devices to which you can connect.
As we said, gamepad support will vary between apps and games. Many titles coming to the Steam platform offer support for PS5 and Xbox Series X / S controllers.rom rom, select Steam, so what Settings (Windows) o Preferences (macOS), and Controller to configure the device (there will be separate settings in the individual games, too much).
Connect a Controller to your Phone or Tablet
To connect both the DualSense Wireless Controller and the Xbox Wireless Controller to your phone or tablet, you can go wireless and trust the Bluetooth connection. This will keep your gamepad connected, even if it is up to individual applications and games to recognize and support the input device.
On Android, go to Connected devices so what Pair a new device to search for your console controller. Once it was coupled, you can tap the cog icon to the right of it on the same screen to manage a limited number of settings, and to remove the input device if you no longer need to keep it connected.
The process is similar on iOS and iPadOS. From Settings, choose Bluetooth and your Apple device will start looking for your controller, which you’ll need to put into pairing mode. If you want to remove a device from the list in the future, tap the blue information icon on the right, then select Forget this Device.
You can you need Bluetooth enabled on your phone or tablet to maintain the connection. Are you you have connection problems of the two devices, turning off and reactivating Bluetooth might be enough to solve them. You also need to make sure that you are running the latest version of Android, iOS, or iPadOS to minimize compatibility issues.
Connecting a Controller to Other Devices
A variety of other devices can accept input from PS5 and Xbox Series X / S controllers, including set-top streaming boxes like the Apple TV. From Settings on the Apple TV, select Remote Controls and Devices and then Bluetooth to establish the link — your controller should present if it is in pairing mode. Once connected, you should be able to use your gamepad to navigate your Apple TV and even play games supported games.
Then there is the Nvidia Shield TV devices, which are excellent game boxes and even run all the streaming apps you may need. From Settings you need to choose Remote & Accessories and then Add accessories to start a scan for nearby Bluetooth devices. Onyour controller is in docking mode, it will appear in the list so you can select it. Currently, there is no support to insert your controller directly into the Nvidia Shield TV with a USB cable.
Those of you with an Amazon Fire TV device can connect one Gamepad PS5 or Xbox Series X / S for better control of your games by going to Settings and choosing Remote Controls and Bluetooth Devices, Game Controllers, and Add New Game Controller. That will start the Bluetooth pairing process. As with all these devices, Compatibility with individual applications and games may vary.
As we’ve said with phones and tablets, Bluetooth doesn’t play well all the time, and a system reboot or a controller reboot might be needed to get all the functionality working properly again. Make sure you keep your streaming boxes up to date with the latest software, as support for third-party controllers is refined and improved in a fairly regular.
