Kamala Khan, aka Ms.Marvel, is the hero we need now! It’s exciting to see a part of the MCU with the new Disney + show, but don’t forget about the comics because a new series of books is upon us.

Samira Ahmed, who is the first South Asian writer to Marvel comics on the Mrs. Marvel series of comics, says EW did Mrs. Marvel a family affair where her cousins always ask her: What would Ms.Marvel do? The author gives fans a taste of what they can expect to see in the smoke. “A big part of that will be on food because we can all connect with Kamala at that level,” he says. “Sometimes it’s going to be the biggest thing in life. She grows a lot in my family culture. ”

Ahmed understands the cultural impact Mrs. Marvel has had since its first appearance in a 2014 issue of Captain Marvel. The current series was created by G. Willow Wilson, Adrian Alphona and edited by Sana Amanat. The novelist remembers what the experience was like when he heard the announcement of the series alone.

“For children of color, Muslim children, there was literally zero representation when I was growing up,” says Ahmed. “Just the fact that Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman was brunette and somewhere outside of America was like,‘ Wow, it’s amazing! So when Sana and Willow announced it Mrs. Marvel, I was so stunned. My heart goes out to all the children who have Ms. comics. Marvel at her childhood. ”

This is the first time Ahmed has written comics, but he is a prolific author who has written two YA novels. Internment and Love, Hate, and Other Filters. The new Mrs. Marvel the comic miniseries debuts this fall with five issues illustrated by Andres Genolet.
