Jaguar Land Rover will be testing a Defender powered by a hydrogen fuel cell this year

Jaguar Land Rover wants to reach zero tailpipe emissions by 2036, and one of the steps it is taking to make a reality is developing a Defender powered by hydrogen fuel cells. The car says it is currently working on a prototype and plans to start testing the emission-free version of its iconic SUV by the end of 2021 in the UK.

Hydrogen fuel cells can power a vehicle by combining hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, with only water as its emission. Jaguar explains that fuel cells allow for a quick refueling and have a high energy density, making them ideal for larger and wider vehicles. In addition, fuel-powered vehicles perform well in cold environments, as they show minimal loss of flow at low temperatures.

The company has defined the work it does to develop the clean energy vehicle as “Project Zeus. “Partly funded by the Advanced Propulsion Center supported by the UK government, the initiative will give Jaguar engineers the information they need to be able to optimize a hydrogen transmission system. The hope is to develop fuel cell vehicles that can provide the same performance and capabilities – when it comes to range, off-road capabilities and even towing – as their conventional counterparts.

In addition to aiming for zero tailpipe emissions by 2036, Jaguar also hopes to achieve zero net carbon emissions throughout its supply chain, products and operations by 2039. Jaguar has not revealed a timeline for the Defender fuel cell other than the one that will begin to be subjected to a test battery this year to verify key attributes, including off-road capacity and fuel consumption.
