IKEA’s first intelligent air purifier is also a bedside table

There are many reasons for buying an air purifier – for example, to breathe cleaner air or to combat allergies – but should it be smart? Prices in this category can range from $ 80 to $ 800 for additional services, including app-based controls, compatibility with smart assistants like Alexa, access to additional data, and customization. As part of its first attempt at a smart air purifier, IKEA strives to enter the market while adhering to its core principles of affordability and minimalism.

The Swedish flat-pack giant is launching two Starkvind units, a floor-standing air purifier and a side table model, for $ 129 and $ 189, respectively. However, you will need to pay for a separate $ 35 smart home hub to access the app-based controls.

At this price point, you won’t get the bells and whistles available on the more expensive smart and conventional models from Mila and Dyson. Both IKEA cleaners are identical on the inside: they contain a three-filter system designed to capture larger particles such as hair and dust; 99.5 percent of finer airborne particles less than 2.5 micrometers (or one 400th millimeter), as well as dust and pollen; and pollutants such as formaldehyde and even unpleasant odors.

Starkvind also has five different fan speeds that can be used alone or monitored and scheduled from the IKEA Home app in combination with its TRÅDFRI smart home hub. The latter is a washer-shaped device that acts as a bridge between your IKEA smart products (such as blinds, lights, and speakers) and your phone. While the automatic mode relies on a built-in sensor that automatically adjusts the fan speed based on the amount of smaller particles in the air. You can check the readings yourself in the app.

The stand-alone Starkvind will be available in black and white, with a side table in dark or light. Both will hit IKEA stores and online in October.
