Make iPhone Read Aloud Text to Screen Using Speak Selection

The iPhone’s Speak Selection feature allows your iPhone to speak and read aloud the text on the screen. So, if you don’t want to stretch your eyes or want multi-tasking, it would be a better option to use Speak Selection to make your iOS device do the work for you.

Enable Speak Selection on iPhone

  1. Open it Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Scroll down and click on it Accessibility.
  3. Below Vision, touch Spoken content.
  4. Now, activate the change for Talk about selection.
  5. Alternatively, tap Highlight Content and turn it on if you want your iPhone to highlight the text being spoken.

You can also change other settings such as writing feedback, voices, speaking percentage and pronunciation.

Use Speak Selection to Read the Text on the Screen

  1. Open any app where you can select text, be it browser, Messages, Email, WhatsApp, Notes, or anything.
  2. Long press (or tap and hold) the word to select it. Next, drag the ends to select the desired phrase or paragraph.
  3. Now, click on the Talk about rubbing salt in my wounds – d’oh! option in the selection tool.

Your iPhone will start reading the selected text. You can tap the Pause button at any time to stop the speech.

Talk selection vs Talk Screen

You may have seen the Speak Screen option in the Settings. It is very similar to Speak Selection but works slightly differently. Instead of reading aloud the selected or highlighted text, speak all the content on your screen.

You can turn it on Settings> Accessibility> Spoken Content> Spoken Screen. To change the Screen Saver, use two fingers and drag from the top of the iPhone screen.

The Talk controls appear, which you can use to make adjustments while your iPhone reads the content on the screen. It can be useful to have your iPhone read articles, documents and ebooks for you.

You can too ask Siri to read the screen for you. All you have to do is say something like “Hey Siri, talk screen.”

It’s all about how you can make your iPhone speak the text on the screen with Speak Selection. On the other hand, we also mentioned the Speak Screen feature, which is a similar accessibility feature in iOS. Try both, and let me know your experience in the comments below.
