Grubhub joins the Russian technology giant Yandex to deliver food to students and others on American university campuses with the help of autonomous robots. Companies have it agreement a multi-year partnership, and robots will begin to leave orders on some campuses this fall. Grubhub works with more than 250 universities across the country.
Yandex says its robots can access areas and navigate obstacles that vehicles cannot. It will be able to deliver food mainly in pedestrian areas and the robot delivery service will be integrated into the Grubhub app. When the robot approaches its destination, the customer will receive a notification. They can retrieve their order using the app to unlock a door on the robot.
The machines use the same automation technology as And autonomous cars from Yandex, and can operate in a variety of climatic conditions. Yandex uses robots for its food and food delivery services in Russia. The rovers have also completed restaurant orders in Ann Arbor, Michigan, since April.
