Are you more comfortable singing behind a virtual person than in a real scene? Your reality TV show is here. Fork and AV Club reports that Fox is launching a series of “world first” avatar songs competition, Alter Ego, which will feature celebrity judges gathered in real life to evaluate the performances of amateur singers who use avatars to “reinvent themselves”.
You will probably recognize the judge panel. Canadian artists Grimes (pictured above) and Alanis Morrissette join forces Will.i.am and Nick Lachey criticizing the music, while Emmy winner Rocsi Diaz will host the deal. Alter Ego debuts sometime in the fall.
It’s an unusual concept, but not necessarily bad. In theory, this could help young talents overcome stage fright or self-esteem problems by using an avatar as a stand-in. It’s certainly a show suited for a tech-savvy artist like Grimes. It’s just a question of whether or not the public enjoys the concept. Anonymize musical performances like The Masked Singer they were successful, but still involved a physical presence for the participants – there’s a chance that viewers wouldn’t be so happy with the digital concerts.
