Android 12 emoji include a ‘universal’ cake and a happier mask wearer

It wouldn’t be World Emoji Day without an update from Google on its upcoming Android emoji, and there will be plenty of updates for special characters for Android 12. Google has expected updates to “hundreds” of characters for the new OS that will make them even more accessible across all applications and platforms. In many cases, they’re simply more reflective – they don’t make as many assumptions about you or context as the use of a given emoji.

For starters, there’s a more “universal” pie instead of the earlier pumpkin pie (where was that one) Android 9?). The bikini emoji doesn’t seem to be wearing it. Food emojis like croissant and shrimp seem to have been cooked well. The camping tent emoji cleverly reflect day or night depending on your OS theme. And the emoji mask no longer looks like a sick person – it’s a recognition of the pandemic era that wearing a mask shows kindness and respect.

You can also see emojis that are more functional and easier to read, such as a more realistic highway character and larger vehicles.

You will have an easier time using the new emoji as well. From Android 12 onwards, apps that support Google’s Appcompat will always support the latest emojis without the need for separate updates. Better emoji functionality also comes across several Google platforms, including consistent support for Gmail in July, a new emoji selector in Chrome OS the same month, and improved functionality in YouTube chats later in 2021. Overall, you don’t have to worry so much about missing emojis or other challenges that arise.
