World food prices hit their highest level in more than a decade |

VFAO Food Price Index, which tracks international food basket prices, rose 3.9% from September, rising for the third straight month.

Cereal prices as a whole rose 3.2 percent and wheat prices rose 5 percent, due to declining harvests in major exporting countries including Canada, Russia and the United States. Prices for all other major grains also rose.

The Vegetable Oil Index rose 9.6%, hitting an all-time high. and dairy products rose 2.6 points on higher demand for butter, skimmed milk powder and whole milk powder as buyers try to replenish stocks. On the contrary, cheese prices have remained stable.

The Meat Index declined for the third straight month on the back of reduced purchases of pork products from China and a sharp decline in beef from Brazil. The price of poultry and sheep meat has risen.

After six consecutive monthly increases, sugar prices also fell 1.8 percent amid limited global demand and significant export surpluses.

Record grain production

Global cereal production is expected to grow in 2021 compared to last year, reaching a new record level of around 2,793 million tonnes.

Global consumption of cereals in 2021/22 is approaching an increase of 1.7 percent, driven by the expected increase in global consumption of wheat as food, which will grow in line with the growth of the world population.

According to a new report released Thursday on the sidelines of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) in Glasgow.

In a video message FAO CEO Qu Dongyu said the report “shows that there are many opportunities to implement renewable energy solutions in agri-food systems.”

Destruction of bunkers

The publication also provides recommendations, including better data collection for managing renewable energy investments, improving access to finance, and a greater focus on awareness raising and capacity building.

Not only is a third of emissions in the agri-food sector attributable to energy use (such as fuel for agricultural machinery), this number grew by 20 percent between 2000 and 2018.

This growth was mainly driven by mechanization in Asia, such as irrigation pumps, agricultural machinery, processing equipment, and materials such as fertilizers, according to the report.

Energy consumption in Africa, home to about 15 percent of the world’s population, has remained largely unchanged. and accounts for only about 4% of world consumption.

The report is the result of a collaborative effort between FAO and the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
