The Women’s National Basketball Association concluded its 25th anniversary season with yet another positive sign for spectators in the championship series.

ESPN reported that the WNBA league attracted 417,000 viewers on Sunday for the fourth game of the WNBA Finals between Chicago Sky and Phoenix Mercury. Sky won their first WNBA championship after beating Mercury 80-74. Celestial defender Kalia Copper became the MVP of the 2021 Finals with an average of 17 points and 5.5 rebounds per series. Sky forward Candice Parker finished the game with 16 points and 13 rebounds for the team.

The four-game series averaged 548,000 viewers, according to ESPN. The network reported that the 3rd game was the most watched, with an average of 524,000 viewers. By comparison, last October, the three-game WNBA Finals series, including Seattle Storm and Las Vegas Aces, averaged 440,000 viewers. The final game of this series was watched by an average of 570,000 viewers. And the 2019 finals, featuring Connecticut Sun and Washington Mystics, averaged 386,000 viewers and lasted five games.

The 2003 Championship, featuring the Los Angeles Sparks and Detroit Shock, remains the league’s most entertaining finals. The three-game series averaged 848,000 viewers. Game 2 of this series was watched by an average of 1.2 million people on ABC.

In the 2021 season, the total WNBA audience averaged 306,000 viewers on Disney (ABC, ESPN) and CBS Television Network. Highest-rated game of the WNBA 25th Anniversary season: August 15 competition between Sky and Storm. This game was watched by an average of 755,000 people on ABC.

The WNBA noted that its audience has grown 51% over the 2020 regular season. The league added that it is also the WNBA’s most watched season since 2008. The WNBA averaged 413,000 viewers that year.
