What are the best bars in the world? New York, London, Singapore

London’s Connaught Bar is once again the best bar in the world.

This is according to the “50 Best Bars in the World”, an annual ranking of the British company William Reed Business Media, which also publishes a list of the “50 best restaurants in the world.”

Following a modest online ceremony in 2020, this year’s results were announced yesterday at a live event in London.

This is the second consecutive win for the Connaught Bar, which has been in the top 5 of the list since 2016.

The Top 50 organization began publishing its annual bar rating in 2008. Since then, only two countries can claim the title of “best bar in the world” – the United Kingdom and the United States.

This year the series has been preserved.

# 1 bar in the world

Connaught Bar located in the 5-star Connaught Hotel in Mayfair, London.

The bar, headed by Italians Agostino Perrone and Giorgio Bargiani, serves classic drinks and his own creations such as Mulata Daisy, which combines rum and sweet liquor with crème de cocoa, lime juice, sugar and fennel seeds.

“The Connaught Bar remains classic and traditional in its core features, while we are always working to push the boundaries of creativity and surprise our guests with sophisticated and elegant innovation,” said Perrone.

The menu changes every year, so the bar will not be “out of date,” he said.

In 13 years, only three bars – Milk and Honey, Artesian and now Connaught Bar – have repeatedly topped the list of “best bars in the world.” Everyone is in London.

Previous bar winners can compete for first place year after year, unlike the World’s 50 Best Restaurants list, which excludes winners from competing in subsequent years.

“Year after year, we haven’t seen people win in bars,” said Mark Sansom, content editor for 50 Best. “We saw no need to bring [the rule] in bars. “

Singapore dominated the bar rankings in Asia, while Manhattan came in 15th on this year’s list.

In Europe, London bars ranked three on the list, including prestigious places 1 and 2. Barcelona added three and Milan two more to the continent’s total.

The list includes eight bars from North America. New York, home to previous No. 1 winners Dead Rabbit and Dante, remained in the top ten with Katana Kitten, a Japanese-style bar, which came in at tenth place. Dante, who was # 1 in 2019 and # 2 in 2020, dropped to 30th this year.

For the first time, Mexico City fared better than New York. Four of his bars made the list, with Licorería Limantour in sixth place.

Three South American bars – all in Buenos Aires, Argentina – made the top 50 list, with Floreria Atlantico coming in fifth.

Australia has listed four bars – three in Sydney, one in Melbourne and two more in the Middle East, both in Dubai.

How is “the best” determined?

The list is a compilation of votes cast by approximately 600 industry “experts” on the Top 50 Organizations.

“They are chosen from about a third of the bartenders and bar owners; from about a third of journalists, authors and educators dealing with alcoholic beverages, and about a third of cocktail fans, ”said Sansom.

Each voter chooses the seven best bars they have visited in the last 18 months. Bar owners and employees cannot designate their own bars. You can choose any bar in the world – from a bar in a luxury hotel to a pub.

Mezcal, served here at Mexico City’s Licorería Limantour, is expected to become a popular drink in 2022.

There are no set criteria, Sansom said, and voters can rate whatever factors they choose.

“Obviously the most important thing is great drinks,” he said. “But I think the voters would have taken into account, and of course, when I walk into a bar, I believe what I feel … as soon as I walk in.”

Until 2020, voters were required to choose at least two bars outside their home country. The Top 50 has dropped this requirement due to travel restrictions due to the pandemic.

Instead, voters were asked to also reflect on how the bars coped with the pandemic.

“Bars that truly cared about their community and the people around them … were rewarded,” Sansom said.

Cocktail trends

Media and TV shows influence the popularity of certain types of cocktails, said Sansom, who highlighted some of the key cocktail trends over the past three decades.

“We are currently seeing the introduction of many different styles of vermouth,” said Sansom, referring to a fortified wine filled with herbs and spices. “And I think the Mexican mezcal has its moment.”

Barjani, chief mixologist at Connaught Bar, generally agrees.

“The rise in popularity of agave spirits, the resurgence of gin and vodka, and the return of vermouth, fortified wines and herbal liqueurs have accompanied the evolution of modern bartending,” he said.

Bargiani said simpler creations using traditional spirits and local ingredients, as well as a desire for more responsible drinking, will also dominate the cocktail market in the coming years.
