DisneyAvatar: The Way of Water surpassed $2 billion at the worldwide box office, becoming the second James Cameron film to reach that level.

Only five other films have reached that milestone – the original Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Cameron’s Titanic, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Avengers: Infinity War.

As of Sunday, The Way of Water has grossed $598 million from domestic ticket sales and $1.426 billion from overseas markets. The film is the sixth highest grossing film of all time and is likely to rise in the rankings as it continues to hit theaters.

“Now the film has joined that box office exclusive club and looks almost effortless,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.

The box office has struggled to recover from the pandemic as audiences watch more at home and fewer films hit the big screen. As the industry recovers, movies like The Way of the Water prove that moviegoers are eager to come back for big blockbusters. And many are willing to pay for premium impressions such as IMAX or large format screens, which are often more expensive.

While The Way of Water had a more subdued run in China than expected, as a result of a spike in Covid cases and hospitalizations due to the virus, it generated strong ticket sales in France, Germany and Korea.

Hitting the $2 billion mark is a good sign for the Avatar franchise, which has three more installments slated for release over the next five years. This is also in line with the goal set by Cameron, who had previously stated that the film would have to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history to break even.

“In keeping with Cameron’s career trajectory as the ‘King of the Box Office’, it’s no surprise that the justification for completing the director’s vision for Pandora’s world is now undeniably validated and acclaimed by enthusiastic fans around the world. the globe,” Dergabedyan said.

It is unclear what the film’s production budget was, although estimates range from $250 million to $350 million, not including marketing costs.

The Way of the Water should continue to consistently deliver at the box office as it doesn’t have direct competition in theaters until mid-February when Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantum Mania releases.
