This 25-year-old was making $ 7,000 a month in a part-time job, working full time.

Just days before the pandemic in March 2020, I started my first full-time job as a marketing coordinator at a dental office in Columbus, Ohio, where I had an annual salary of $ 34,500.

Every day the office was filled with clients looking for teeth whitening and veneers. But as the pandemic intensified and mask requirements were enforced, I remember thinking: Why are all these people planning cosmetic dental work when their smiles are now hidden behind masks?

It became clear how much the upper part of the face affects the expression on the face. I found myself fixated on reading people’s emotions, especially through their eyes and eyebrows.

So I started researching microblading, a semi-permanent tattooing procedure in which small strokes – in the form of individual hairs – are applied in the eyebrow area.

When I didn’t have a dentist change, I took microblading classes. For several months, I trained for several hours every day.

Eventually, what started out as a hobby turned into a lucrative side job. I met five clients a week and made at least $ 7200 a month.

This June, after three months of combining both professions, I decided to quit my regular job and turn my side job in microblading into a full-fledged business. I named it Columbus Cosmetic Ink

Today, I make about $ 8,750 a month, including tips, which is three times what I made in a dental office.

Of course, there are problems associated with running your own company. But at 25, I know that I still have a lot to learn by growing my business. Most importantly, I am happier than anyone else than I have ever been.

Here are my top tips for anyone looking to start a part-time job or a full-time business:

1. First create a business plan

Before setting up a website and registering Columbus Cosmetic Ink in my county, I created a business plan.

You don’t need to have a business background to do this. Mine wasn’t perfect, but it was a way for me to stay on top of important components like customer demand, start-up costs, financial projections, and marketing strategies.

I also followed my competitors and trends. Taking part in a full-time job was risky, but having this business plan helped me feel more confident and prepared.

I am currently working with my clients from a small space in a showroom, which is much cheaper than renting an entire window display. It also provides an opportunity to meet other customers who come to the salon.

Apartment rentals in my area can range from $ 200 to $ 300 per week. As my business grows, I plan to rent a much larger space of my own.

2. Consider working temporarily for free.

One of the most difficult tasks in obtaining additional information is attracting customers. I knew I was a talented microblading artist, but others people didn’t know that. Therefore, in order to earn their trust in my craft, I needed to create a portfolio.

I used Nextdoor, a neighborhood app where you can share local tips to get started selling your services. I published an article “Models Wanted: Free Microblading” and ended up getting a lot of attention and interest.

My best seller is Coco Brow, which costs $ 450 and includes one free correction.

I helped people achieve their dream eyebrows in exchange for making the information public and gave each person a $ 100 gift certificate to give to a friend.

I expected to temporarily work for free, so I saved as much money as I could before leaving work. If you cannot afford to work for free, consider charging a small fee to cover some of the supply costs.

When I had enough clients to post photos on my website and social media, more orders arrived. It was then that I started charging the full price, which varies depending on the specific procedures.

The biggest seller is my signature Coco Brow, which costs $ 450. It includes free retouching and is valid for 1.5 to 2 years.

3. Love what you do and keep improving your craft.

I have always been enthusiastic about everything related to beauty. Back when I was in college, I worked as a freelance makeup artist.

I also had experience at Ulta Beauty, a cosmetics retail store where I learned to match clients by color, as well as how to complement different skin types and facial structures using different shapes, colors and techniques.

My clients are the main reason why I happily go to work every day. Believe it or not, good eyebrows can give you confidence and change your life.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to work with a woman breast cancer survivor who lost all of her eyebrow hair due to chemotherapy. After I finished her brows, I handed her the mirror and she burst into tears.

These emotional moments make my work even more rewarding.

4. Prepare to work hard and make sacrifices.

Creating your own working hours gives you a lot of freedom, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you will work less.

When I had a full-time dental office job – and Columbus Cosmetic Ink was still a side job – I worked 60 to 70 hours a week. Sometimes I had to sacrifice my social life, sleep, lunch breaks and leisure time.

My clients are the main reason why I happily go to work every day.
