The UAW calls on its members to urge Congress to support union-made electric vehicles in the United States.

DETROIT – United Auto Workers is calling on its more than 400,000 members to call on elected officials to support the proposed tax break for union-created electric vehicles.

The Detroit-based union on Wednesday sent out a message through its “take action” alert that cites an Actionnetwork.org petition in support of the proposal, which is a provision of President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better Act.

A proposed $ 4,500 tax credit for a union-built electric vehicle has sparked controversy, sparking the ire of Toyota Motor, Honda Motor and other automakers that produce electric cars and trucks in the US, but with disorganized workers. Tesla CEO Elon Musk, whose non-union workers make most of the electric vehicles in the US, also criticized the proposal.

The loan is part of a proposed $ 12,500 tax credit for the purchase of an electric vehicle, including a $ 7,500 tax credit for the purchase of a plug-in electric vehicle, as well as $ 500 if the vehicle’s battery is manufactured in the United States.

Biden is a union advocate and has consistently supported incentives to expand electric vehicle production in the United States.

“This provision recognizes the importance of unionized workers as the front line in creating well-paid and safe jobs for the entire automotive industry. It is a government policy that invests in workers and communities and should be a model for all industries, ”the statement said. A UAW petition that is also sponsored by the AFL-CIO.

The petition includes a template to allow members to send a letter to members of Congress urging them to support the measure.

Opponents of the unionized electric vehicle tax credit said it unfairly favored General Motors, Ford Motor and Stellantis, formerly Fiat Chrysler. The hourly workers for these automakers – traditionally known as Detroit 3 – are from the UAW.

The stimulus package for electric vehicles is expected to cost about $ 15.6 billion, according to the Joint Tax Committee.
