House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has tested positive for Covid but has no symptoms, her office said on Thursday.
“After testing negative this week, Speaker Pelosi tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently asymptomatic,” her deputy chief of staff, Drew Hammill, tweeted.
Pelosi’s positive test is the latest in a series of Covid diagnoses among senior government officials who visited Washington’s Gridiron Club and Foundation Dinner Saturday night.
Although Pelosi did not attend the annual gala, Hammill told CNBC that since then, more than a dozen powerful D.C. brokers who have been there have tested positive. Among them are Attorney General Merrick Garland, Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo and Congressmen Joaquin Castro and Adam Schiff.
Pelosi’s test result also came a day after a California Democrat stood next to President Joe Biden at a White House bill signing event;
Biden tested negative for Covid Wednesday night “as part of his routine testing,” the White House said in a statement.
“The president is not considered a close contact of Speaker Pelosi, as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,” the statement said. The President has seen Speaker Pelosi at White House events and has had brief contact over the past two days.”
“He will continue to be tested regularly. The President wishes Speaker Pelosi a speedy recovery,” the White House said.
Pelosi, 82, is second in line in the presidential succession to Vice President Kamala Harris in the event of Biden’s death or incapacity.
“Speaker is fully vaccinated and boosted and is grateful for the solid protection the vaccine has provided,” Hammill tweeted.
“The speaker will quarantine as directed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and encourages everyone to get vaccinated, revaccinated and tested regularly.”
Politico reported on Wednesday that several journalists who attended the Gridiron dinner also tested positive.
CIA director William Burns also tested positive for the virus last week.
