Federal regulators have fined the Family Dollar more than $1.2 million fines for safety violations at two stores in OhioThis was announced on Monday by the Office of Occupational Safety and Health of the Ministry of Labor.

In January and February of this year, OSHA inspected Family Dollar stores in Columbus and Maple Heights, Ohio and found blocked exits, unstable stacks, cluttered work areas, and inaccessible electrical equipment and fire extinguishers.

At the Columbus office, the agency found that “water-soaked ceiling tiles” fell to the floor several times while employees worked. quote.

The agency found 11 violations between the two stores, totaling more than 300 violations by Family Dollar and its parent company Dollar Tree over the past five years, OSHA said.

“Family Dollar and Dollar Tree stores have a long and troubling history of prioritizing profits over employee safety,” Assistant Secretary of State for Occupational Safety and Health Doug Parker said in a statement. “Over and over again we find the same violations – blocked or cluttered emergency exits and passageways, boxes of goods stacked high or in front of electrical panels and fire extinguishers. Every danger can lead to tragedy.”

A spokesperson for Dollar Tree did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The company can challenge the order and the fine with the agency.

The fines come just months after the Food and Drug Administration found rodents, dead and alive, in more than 400 Family Dollar stores, leading to a massive voluntary product recall last February.

Dollar stores have seen growing success amid a recent period of soaring inflation as consumers grapple with higher prices for everything from groceries to gasoline. Earlier this year, Dollar Tree raised its price to $1.25.
