DETROIT — General Motors on Wednesday unveiled the Buick Wildcat, a new concept vehicle designed to mark a game-changer for the brand as it will offer only electric vehicles in North America by the end of this decade.

The car reflects the future design and technology directions of the 119-year-old brand, including a heavily redesigned logo for the first time in over 30 years.

Buick marketing manager Rob Peterson said Wildcat elements will be included in Buick vehicles – both traditional combustion engine and electric vehicles – starting next year.

“This is a very, very important concept for the Buick brand because it launches us in a new direction,” he said in an interview with CNBC.

A new gasoline-powered SUV with new features and logo will be introduced this fall for the US market, Peterson said. It is expected to go on sale next year.

While Buick is GM’s smallest lineup in the US, the brand is extremely important to the automaker in China, where it has been a prominent player in the luxury market for decades.

GM has said it plans to offer only electric vehicles by 2035. His luxury brand Cadillac has also set a goal of going all-electric by 2030.

Buick’s future electric vehicles will be released under the name Electra, a former car name that was used by the brand for decades until 1990. Buick used the Wildcat name for nearly 70 years, including for other concept and production vehicles in the 1960s and 1970s.

The company hopes that the move to electric vehicles will help shed the boring image of a manufacturer of cars for the elderly and attract new, younger customers.

“The best way to change personality is through design language and messaging, and I think the sophistication of this new design language will be one of the fastest ways to get more people to think about it,” Peterson said. “We will not miss this opportunity.”

Not only does the concept car carry a new logo and design, it’s also a smaller, sleeker Buick than what’s currently on the market. From the 2021 model year, the brand exclusively offers crossovers or SUVs.

Automakers regularly use concept cars to gauge customer interest or show the future direction of a car or brand. Vehicles are not intended for sale to consumers.

Peterson said that Buick will continue to focus on making new SUVs, though he didn’t completely abandon the idea of ​​launching a car for the brand at some point.

Buick decided to launch a concept car instead of an SUV to highlight its dynamic looks and proportions, said Teresa Pinazzo, Buick’s exterior and interior design manager.

“We are all about sculptural beauty. This is the new face of Buick and it really just allows us to create the perfect canvas,” she said. “Ultimately it’s a philosophical and visual expression of where the brand is going in the future.”

“Fresh aesthetic”

The look of the car is much more aggressive than the brand’s current models, with a large, low, horizontally lined grille and new signature winged headlights front and rear. The car’s roof around the doors also rises at an angle for easier entry and exit.

Inside the four-seater is a floating center console that extends from the front of the car to the rear seats.

It has white seats with red seat belts surrounded by a “legato” green interior. The control panel is a 30.4-inch LCD screen and a translucent steering wheel.

The new Buick logo features three of the brand’s shields that date back to the 1950s, but in a more modern and clean look. The concept car’s main logos are illuminated “winged” hockey sticks, while the background of the sticks on the wheels is painted in Buick’s signature red, white, and blue colors.

“A new logo to symbolize our new direction, the adoption of Electra as a series of names, and a new aesthetic for our lineup all serve as the cornerstone of this important transformation,” said Duncan Aldred, global head of Buick.
