DETROIT – Jeep unveiled its world’s first plug-in hybrid, the Grand Cherokee, on Wednesday, in an effort to transform its SUVs from petrol eaters to green cars.

The new 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe has roughly 25 miles on an all-electric drive before switching to a turbocharged four-cylinder to power the car. It will join the new family of redesigned Grand Cherokee SUVs when it hits dealerships early next year.

“The Jeep Grand Cherokee is our global flagship that will lead the Jeep brand into a new era of premium sophistication, innovative technology, advanced SUV capability and electrification,” said Jeep CEO Christian Meunier.

A new three-row version of the Grand Cherokee went on sale earlier this year. A traditional two-row model with V-6 and V-8 internal combustion engines, such as the three-row, is expected to hit US showrooms in the fourth quarter. All fifth-generation Grand Cherokee SUVs feature a redesigned interior and exterior.

Jeep says the Grand Cherokee 4xe combines two electric motors, a 400-volt battery pack, and a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder to produce 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Its total range is estimated at more than 440 miles after fully charged and refueled with gas, with an EPA estimate of 57 mpg equivalent.

The 2022 Grand Cherokee 4xe will be Jeep’s second plug-in hybrid electric vehicle in the United States. It will join the Wrangler plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, which went on sale earlier this year.

Pricing for the 2022 two-row Grand Cherokee, including the 4xe, has not been disclosed. The starting price for the three-row version ranges from $ 39,000 to $ 65,000.

Jeep is expected to be a key part of growth and electrification plans for Stellantis, a new parent company formed earlier this year through the merger of Fiat Chrysler and French automaker Groupe PSA. The company will invest at least $ 35.5 billion (€ 30 billion) in electric vehicles and assistive technology by 2025.

Meunier said that every new Jeep will offer some form of electrification over the next few years. These plans are expected to include all-electric vehicles as well as plug-in hybrids and PHEVs that combine electrification with combustion engines such as the Grand Cherokee and Wrangler 4xe models.

Jeep is expected to unveil its first all-electric vehicle in 2023. Earlier this year, he unveiled an all-electric concept version of his Wrangler SUV called the Magneto.
