BEIJING. Tesla and BYD remained the undisputed leaders in China’s electric vehicle market in 2021, while smaller rivals such as Nio emerged with new competitors, according to the China Passenger Car Association.

The budget electric car Hongguang Mini has retained its top-selling spot, with sales more than tripled last year to 395,451 units, data from the association showed on Thursday.

But pricier vehicles from Tesla and BYD have dominated the top-selling vehicle list in the new energy vehicle category, which includes battery-powered vehicles and hybrid vehicles.

Here is a list of the top 15 best-selling new energy passenger cars, including SUVs, in China for 2021:

1. Hongguan Mini (SAIC-GM-Wuling)
2. Qin (BYD)
3. Model Y (Tesla)
4. Model 3 (Tesla)
5. Khan (BYD)
6. Song (BYD)
7. Lee One (Lee Auto)
8. eQ (Cheri)
9. Benben E.V. (Changan)
10. Aion S (GAC Motor spin-off)
11. Ora Black Cat (Great Wall Motor)
13. Tang (BYD)
14. Ora Good Cat (Great Wall Motor)
15. Nezha V (Hozon Auto)

Three BYD models entered the top ten, with sales of the BYD Qin sedan reaching 187,227 units, surpassing sales of all Tesla models.

Not far from BYD Qin was the Tesla Model Y, which was launched in China last year and climbed to the top of the high-end new energy SUV category with 169,853 units sold in 2021, according to the association.

The Tesla Model 3 was next, with 150,890 units sold last year, up almost 10% from 2020, the data shows.

Some in China’s auto industry have questioned the accuracy of the association’s data. But the numbers may reflect broader trends.

Li Auto’s Li One hybrid ranked in the top 10 new energy passenger cars, while the Xpeng P7 sedan ranked in the top 15.

Relatively new to the market, the low-cost all-electric Nezha V SUV took 15th place, with three much more expensive Nio models dropping even lower in the sales rankings.

Nezha is the brand of startup Hozon Auto, which closed a 4 billion yuan ($625 million) funding round in the fourth quarter. Nezha V prices start at 62,900 yuan ($9,722) after subsidies. By comparison, the Nio ES6 SUV starts at RMB 346,660 after subsidies.
