DETROIT – General Motors on Tuesday unveiled a new high-performance version of the Z06 of its famous American sports car, which takes it back to its roots.

The 2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 – an important track-oriented model – will be powered by a new 5.5-liter naturally aspirated V-8 with 670 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. According to GM, this is the most powerful engine of its kind in a production car.

For Vette enthusiasts, this is a return to normalcy. The previous Z06, which was last produced in the 2019 model year, was the only one in its history – since 1963 – equipped with a supercharged V-8 engine. A supercharger improves engine performance, but is heavier and can be seen as a shortcut to more power.

“We didn’t think we could go further with naturally aspirated engines, right when we did boost,” Tedj Uchter, executive chief engineer for the Corvette, told CNBC. “But this time we started with a blank sheet of paper. This car is more of a blank sheet of paper than we’ve ever done for the Z06. “

Officials declined to provide a specific price, but said it would be comparable to the 44% premium between the latest generation Z06 and the base model. Thus, the starting price will be around $ 86,400.

Production of the 2023 Corvette Z06 is expected to begin next summer at GM’s Bowling Green assembly plant.

The car is expected to hit 0-60 mph in just 2.6 seconds, making it the fastest Corvette to date. This compares to other supercars that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars from Lamborghini and others, but slower than some all-electric Tesla cars like the Model S Plaid in less than two seconds.

The company said other details about the Z06, such as top speed and fuel economy, will be released closer to the car going on sale.

Sales of Z06 models account for 30% of Corvette sales, according to Steve Mayoros, vice president of marketing for Chevrolet. He said he expects to continue, if not more, with a new version.

“There are only a couple of things in our portfolio that you can, using the commonly used term, ‘build on’ and truly be a brand magnet. And the Z06 is definitely one of them, ”he told CNBC.

GM unveiled the 2023 Corvette Z06 online on Tuesday before an advertisement for the car will be shown later that day during the first game of the World Series.

This is the fifth generation of the Z06. This is the first Z06 since GM introduced the mid-engined Corvette in 2019. Prior to this, the engine was located under the front hood.

Final before the electric corvette?

When asked about the electric Corvette, Uchter said, “Only the future will tell.” He later said that he was “almost certain” that the company was reaching the limits of the V-8 engine, and that the Z06 could be the best hit for a traditional gasoline car.

“Nobody else is investing in this space,” he told CNBC. “Here we are going against the trend. I don’t know how long we will be doing this, but we are happy to do it right now. ”

Auto engineers expect at least one hybrid version of the Corvette to outrun the electric version of the car and possibly the electric Corvette SUV as early as 2025. AutoForecast Solutions expects a hybrid variant as early as model year 2023, while LMC Automotive expects an all-electric Corvette crossover in mid to late 2025.
