General Motors plans to build a working version of its new electric Chevrolet Silverado for commercial customers and a fully loaded luxury model that will sell for over $ 100,000 when the company launches a new pickup next year.

The Detroit-based automaker said Wednesday that the WT, or Work Truck, will be the first truck offered to fleet buyers in the spring of 2023, with a fully loaded, $ 105,000 RST limited-edition model coming to consumers next fall. GM said the work truck will cost $ 39,900.

Both segments are key customers in GM’s plans to increase sales and maintain profitability while fully switching to electric vehicles by 2035.

“As we get closer to the calendar, trucks will continue to be a player in the franchise, which means all volume, share and profitability,” GM North America President Steve Carlisle told CNBC. “The goal is to grow the company as we go through this transition, not keep it flat or downsize, so trucks have a huge role to play in all of this.”

Key specs for the Silverado EV RST include up to 664 horsepower and over 780 lb-ft of torque, as well as an estimated 0-60 mph time of less than 4.5 seconds, according to GM. It will also be equipped with a hands-free highway driving system, four-wheel steering and 24-inch wheels.

Both initial versions of the Silverado EV will also have a total range of over 400 miles and will be able to charge 100 miles in about 10 minutes using a DC fast charger, the company said.

Chevy vs Ford

The top-of-the-line Silverado EV is roughly $ 14,000 more than the F-150 Lightning. The price difference is likely due to additional features as well as Ford’s production platform. The electric F-150 shares many components with the traditional pickup truck that Ford sells in the hundreds of thousands annually.

This can be compared to the electric Silverado, which is used in conjunction with the recently launched GMC Hummer EV pickup on the new platform.

“Obviously the Hummer is a big step, but the Silverado is a step towards bulk trucks,” Carlisle said.

The $ 105,000 starter version of the Silverado EV RST is also slightly more expensive than Rivian Automotive’s fully-loaded R1T, a smaller electric pickup that went on sale late last year and starts at $ 67,500 but could top $ 100,000.

Other versions expected

GM will offer other versions of the Silverado EV after an initial launch in 2023, according to Steve Mayoros, Chevrolet’s vice president of marketing. He described the production, timeline and volume of the Silverado EV as the “Rubik’s Cube” that GM still defines.

GM has promised investors that its move to an all-electric vehicle by 2035 will be profitable.

“This is definitely the goal that drives this all,” Carlisle said.

The role of fleet sales is considered important for electric vehicles, especially pickup trucks, due to emerging data analytics and logistics tools that automakers see as opportunities to generate recurring revenue with fleet customers.

Luxury pickup trucks are also becoming increasingly important to automakers like GM and Ford, resulting in record prices and profits. GM has been leading pickup truck sales in the US for the past eight years.

“It’s a franchise for us today, and it’s a big deal in the industry,” Carlisle said. “So we’re not going to give up any position on this while this is unfolding.”

Silverado E.V.

While the 2024 Silverado EV shares its name with the traditional Chevrolet pickup, physically it has more in common with the GMC Hummer EV.

In particular, both pickups are fitted with the new GM. Ultium EV Platform and Batteries. They also include new technologies and outstanding performance figures, as well as large screens inside vehicles and a sleek new look with different LED light strips.

The Silverado EV RST also has a unique feature called an intermediate door, with the once popular Chevrolet Avalanche, GM’s pickup truck, produced for over a decade starting in 2001. The rear seats of the vehicle can be folded down and the rear window above them can be removed. and stored in the seats. This feature dramatically increases the size of the vehicle body from 5 feet 11 inches to almost 11 feet.

“We’ve had a lot of satisfied Avalanche customers,” said Ryan Vaughan, Chevrolet’s design director for the Silverado EV. “Having said that, this is not the new Avalanche.”

Chevrolet officials promise that despite the new look of the Silverado EV, it will deliver everything that traditional truck buyers have come to expect.

“It’s not for nothing that it’s called Silverado,” Majoros said. “It’s a great, powerful brand.”

The work truck version of the Silverado EV will offer 510 horsepower and 615 lb-ft of torque, according to GM. Both models are taller than the current Chevrolet Silverado 1500 models, but the towing and payload performance of the electric vehicle will initially be lower than many models.

The $ 105,000 Silverado EV RST will be available for booking on Chevrolet’s website from 1pm on Wednesday. Initially, the WT pickup will go to a predetermined fleet.
