GM, EVgo and Pilot Company to build EV charger network on US highways

General Motors is building a new network of fast electric vehicle chargers in partnership with Pilot Co., owner of the Pilot and Flying J travel centers and EVgo electric vehicle charging network.

The companies will install a total of 2,000 fast chargers at 500 Pilot locations along US highways at about 50-mile intervals, they said Thursday. The partners expect to install and launch a significant portion of these chargers by the end of 2023.

“GM and Pilot Company designed this program to combine private investment with anticipated government grants and utility programs to help reduce range anxiety and significantly close the long-distance EV charger demand gap,” said in a statement. CEO of Pilot Co. Shamik Konar.

The deal, which is expected to come through with grants from the US government, is part of GM’s broader $750 million effort to build an affordable fast-charging network as it prepares to launch a series of new electric vehicles. the next few years.

The chargers will be installed, operated and maintained by EVgo and will include powerful fast chargers capable of charging up to 350 kilowatts, as well as charging stations designed to accommodate electric vehicles towing trailers. Chargers will be open to all EVs compatible with DC fast charging.

GM and EVgo previously announced a plan to install an additional 3,250 fast chargers in and around US cities and suburbs by the end of 2025. GM is also working with its US and Canadian dealers to install up to 40,000 chargers in dealer communities. , an effort that focuses on “underserved rural and urban areas,” the company said.

Research has shown that drivers’ concerns about access to chargers on highways are a limiting factor for EV adoption.

“We are committed to an all-electric, zero-emissions future, and ensuring the right charging infrastructure is a key piece of the puzzle,” said GM CEO Mary Barra. “With travel centers across North America, Pilot is the ideal partner to reach a broad audience of EV drivers.”
