Ford F-150 Lightning range outperforms Rivian electric pickups and lags behind GMC

2022 Ford F-150 Lightning

The 2022 Ford Motor F-150 Lightning pickup truck will have an electric range of up to 320 miles, according to the EPA’s final estimates released Monday by the automaker.

The all-electric pickup’s maximum range is 20 miles more than Ford originally estimated, putting it just above the range of the 2022 Rivian R1T, but still less than the 2022 GMC Hummer EV.

The Rivian R1T with an optional larger battery pack is rated for up to 314 miles. GM estimates that the GMC Hummer Edition 1 pickup has traveled 329 miles. Both are the only vehicle versions currently available.

Rivian and GM have confirmed that longer range pickup options will be available later, including the R1T with a range of more than 400 miles and the Hummer pickup with a range of 350 miles. These models are currently not available for sale.

Although the F-150 Lightning has a shorter range than the Hummer, it is more efficient. Both the Lightning and R1T have a combined highway and city rating of 70 mpg, which is the equivalent of an electric vehicle’s range in miles per gallon. The Hummer has a 47 mpg rating, about 33% less than other pickups. according to “Car and driver”.

Overall, the F-150 Lightning will have a range of 230 miles, 300 miles or 320 miles, depending on the model and size of the batteries in the vehicles.

Ford is expected to begin series production of the F-150 Lightning soon, with deliveries to begin in the spring. The performance-oriented version of the F-150 Lightning will cost around $40,000, while the high-end model will cost around $90,000.

The Tesla pickup may one day be the leader, but not now. When CEO Elon Musk first unveiled his automaker’s Cybertruck in November 2019, he said versions of the boxy electric pickup would have a range of 500 miles. Musk said in January that production of the pickup has been delayed several times and is not expected until next year.
