Ever since the Dodge Charger was reintroduced in 2006, Dodge has built a reputation for building muscle cars with big engines and flashy paint.
But the company plans to discontinue the Challenger and Charger gasoline engines, as well as the V-8 Hemi engines that power some of its most popular versions.
Dodge’s recently unveiled all-electric Dodge Charger Daytona SRT concept is an attempt to maintain a muscle car identity in an era when it’s getting harder to sell a gas-guzzling sports car.
In fact, selling a car is becoming increasingly difficult. SUVs and trucks are taking over the American automotive market. RBC Capital estimates that Dodge Jeep and Ram sub-brands account for 50% of parent company Stellantis’ profits.
Meanwhile, many fans of powerful but voracious Dodge muscle cars are resigning themselves to the clear end of an era.
