The Walt Disney Company has named Alice Bowen President of Disney+.
The company said Thursday that Bowen, who was its executive vice president of business operations for Disney streaming, will immediately take over as lead executive officer of the Disney+ subscription service.
Michael Pall previously served as president of Disney+ in addition to the company’s other streaming brands.
In his new standalone role, Bowen is expected to spearhead the launch of Disney+’s advertising tier as well as promotion of the service and its content. She will continue to report to Michael Poll, President of Disney Direct Sales.
Disney announced its new ad-supported Disney+ tier in March, saying it will launch in the US later this year. The new offer will be expanded internationally in 2023.
In August, the company unveiled a new pricing structure that includes Disney+ advertising support as part of an effort to increase the profitability of the streaming business. Starting December 8 in the US, Disney+ with ads will cost $7.99 per month, which is currently the price of Disney+ without ads. The price of Disney+ ad-free will increase by 38% to $10.99, an increase of $3 per month.
“Alice has been an indispensable member of our leadership team since the inception of Disney+,” Poll said. “She has a rare and valuable combination of deep institutional knowledge, forward-thinking innovation and a global vision based on a strong focus on our customer, which is perfect for this important role, and I am confident that she will have an immediate and positive impact on the business.”
Bowen joined Disney in 2017 as senior vice president of digital media and chief technology officer for the company’s international operations. She previously served as CTO for News Corp Australia.
