BEIJING — Mainland China announced on Tuesday significant progress in providing Covid-19 booster shots for people “over 80”.
As of Monday, 65.8% of that age group had received booster shots, the official told reporters.

According to previous reports, this is more than 40% as of November 11th.
China also announced a new initiative to further vaccinate its elderly population against Covid-19.
The official told a press conference that vaccination is still effective in preventing serious illness and death, and that the elderly are among the biggest beneficiaries.

Analysts say vaccinating more of the population will help put China on the path to discovery. So far, only Chinese-made vaccines are available locally.
Covid vaccination rates for older people in China tend to be lower than those in the US and Singapore.
Tuesday’s announcement and press conference followed weekend riots as people in cities across China voiced their dissatisfaction with Covid policies. Local authorities have tightened measures in some areas, in contrast to signals from Beijing earlier this month that suggested China was on track to reopen.
Weekend demonstrations influenced market sentiment in Asia on Monday. There were no signs of further protests amid heightened security measures.
According to the Nomura model, the latest Covid control measures in mainland China negatively impacted 25.1% of national GDP as of Monday. This is higher than the previous peak of 21.2% recorded in April during the Shanghai lockdown.
Asked in English if China is reviewing its Covid policy in the wake of the protests, the official simply said that they are monitoring the development of the virus, without further clarification.
On Monday, the country reported the first drop in daily local infections in more than a week.
